SMU visits Memphis on Tuesday, the first of back-to-back matchups for the programs this week. The Mustangs will host Memphis on Thursday. The Mustangs enter the game 8-2 on the season and 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference after a 78-65 win at UCF on Saturday.

The Mustangs have won all three of their road games this season, 66-64 at Dayton on Dec. 5, 79-71 at Temple on Dec. 30 and at UCF on Saturday. 

In the win at UCF, SMU shot 53.8% while holding UCF to 38.1% (31% 2nd half). Four Mustangs scored in double figures with Kendric Davis scoring recording game highs of 21 points and 9 assists. Feron Hunt had 11 points and 8 rebounds while Yor Anei scored 12 points with 4 blocked shots. Preseason All-AAC honoree Tyson Jolly made his season debut with 5 points and 2 blocked shots in 19 minutes.

SMU and Memphis are scheduled to play twice in a three-day span. This would be the fifth time SMU has played the same team in consecutive games since the 1952-53 season. The two most recent were the final regular season game and the first game of the conference tournament.

COACHING FOR LITERACY (CoachingForLiteracy.org): The game at Memphis is the first of two #Fight4Literacy games scheduled for the Mustangs. SMU will host a #Fight4Literacy for the seventh straight season SMU (Feb. 17 vs Tulane). Jonathan Wilfong (SMU '17) and Andrew Renshaw, two then-high school seniors from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Coaching for Literacy in 2012. Proceeds raised from the event go towards funding effective literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. Coaching for Literacy partners with collegiate and professional sports teams. --- The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy. By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy raises money to supports effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students. 

AAC LEADERS: SMU leads the AAC in scoring (79.1), FG% (47.0), 3FG% (36.2), assists (17.0, 27th NCAA) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3). The Mustangs are second in 3FGs (8.0), blocked shots (5.2, 16th NCAA) and FT% (73.8).

BALANCE: SMU nearly has five averaging double figures: Kendric Davis 19.3 (1st AAC), Feron Hunt 12.2 (14th), Emmanuel Bandoumel 11.8 (16th), Ethan Chargois 10.1 (20th), Darius McNeill 8.6.

QUICK HITS:
• Kendric Davis was named the AAC Player of the Week and ESPN National POTW on Dec. 7. He was on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 30, Dec. 21, Jan. 4, Jan. 11 and Jan. 25. He was named to the weekly honor roll three times in 2019-20. Feron Hunt earned an AAC Weekly Honor Roll nod on Jan. 18. He was also a 3-time weekly honoree in 2019-20.

• Yor Anei is averaging 6.8 points and 2.8 blocks while shooting 59.3% from the field.

• Emmanuel Bandoumel is averaging 11.8 points (16th AAC), 3.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 43.5% from three (5th AAC) and 75.9% on FTs (11th AAC). He had a career-high 19 points, including the buzzer-beating game winner for a 66-64 victory at Dayton on Dec. 5.

• Kendric Davis (2020-21 Preseason All-AAC First Team, ESPN Player of the Week [D7], AAC Player of the Week [D7], AAC Weekly Honor Roll [N30, D21, J4, J11, J18]) is averaging 19.3 points (1st AAC, 50th NCAA) and 7.8 assists (1st AAC, 2nd NCAA), 1.6 steals (3rd AAC) with a 3.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (1st AAC, 14th NCAA). He also among the league leaders in FG% (52.3, 7th), 3FG% (41.2, 8th) and FT% (86.0, 3rd AAC). He has 5 or more assists in 29 of 36 games as a Mustang (8 of 10 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7. In 2019-20, he averaged 14.2 points (8th AAC) and an AAC-best 6.7 assists (10th NCAA) with 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals. He was 88-103 on FTs (85.4%, 2nd AAC). His assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.7 led the AAC and ranked 19th nationally.

• Ethan Chargois is averaging 10.1 points (20th AAC) and has been in double figures in 6 of 10 games. He is also averaging 6.1 rebounds (12th AAC), 1.2 steals and 3.2 assists (13th AAC) with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio (10th). He has 975 career points (SMU has 41 1000-point scorers).

• Feron Hunt (AAC Weekly Honor Roll J18) is averaging 12.2 points (14th AAC), 8.6 rebounds (2nd AAC) and 1.1 blocks (5th AAC) while shooting 54.7% from the field (4th AAC). He has nine career double-doubles (four this season) and has 7 or more rebounds in 42 career games (9 of 10 this season).

• Charles Smith IV is 2nd in the AAC in 3FG% (46.9%, 15-32) while averaging 6.0 points and 1.5 rebounds.

• Tyson Jolly (2020-21 Preseason All-AAC Second Team, 2019-20 All-AAC Third Team): Made his season debut in the win at UCF. Missed the first 9 games this season (personal reasons). Last season, averaged 14.5 points (7th AAC) and 6.2 rebounds (13th AAC) while shooting 45.8% overall (11th AAC) and 38.2% from three (7th AAC). He had 15+ points in 18 of 30 games and 20+ on six occasions. He also hit 78.0% on FTs (14th AAC), including a 10-10 performance in the 73-72 OT win over [20-19] Houston on Feb. 15.

• SMU started 6-0 this season after starting 8-0 last season, reaching at least 6-0 in back-to-back seasons for the second time in program history. The other was 1984-85 (9-0) and 1985-86 (6-0).

• SMU is 98-51 under Tim Jankovich and 68-17 at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs are 5-2 at Moody this season and 20-4 in the past 24 games at Moody Coliseum (4-2 this season).

• SMU is 51-12 in regular-season non-conference games under Tim Jankovich. The Mustangs are 41-4 at Moody Coliseum in those games, 3-4 in neutral-site games and 7-4 in true road games. 

• SMU is 70-44 in AAC play since start of 2014-15. The Mustangs are 43-15 at Moody Coliseum.

LAST GAME (W, 78-65 at UCF on Jan. 23): ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Kendric Davis had 21 points as SMU topped Central Florida 78-65 on Saturday. Yor Anei had 12 points and four blocks for SMU (8-2, 4-2 American Athletic Conference). Feron Hunt added 11 points and eight rebounds and Emmanuel Bandoumel scored 11. Darius Perry had 14 points and seven assists for the Knights (3-6, 1-5), whose losing streak stretched to five games. Brandon Mahan added 13 points and C.J. Walker 10.

THE SERIES VS MEMPHIS (12-14 on Court) (+11-14 Official): SMU swept the meetings in 2019-20 after Memphis had won the last two matchups. Before that, SMU had won six straight. The Mustangs swept Memphis en route to the 2016-17 AAC title, opening conference play with a 58- 54 win at Memphis before rounding off the regular season with a 103-62 rout to claim the outright conference title on Senior Day. The Mustangs have lost 3 of the 12 matchups against Memphis since both teams joined The American. (+11-14 overall, 8-3 in AAC; win in 2013-14 later vacated)

LAST SEASON VS MEMPHIS (W, 74-70 at Memphis on Jan. 25, 2020): MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Kendric Davis had 20 points and 5 assists, Emmanuel Bandoumel added 14 and SMU used a late run to upset No. 20 Memphis 74-70. Isiaha Mike scored 13 points, all in the second half, and Tyson Jolly finished with 10 for the Mustangs (15-4, 5-2). D.J. Jeffries led Memphis (14-5, 3-3) with 18 points while Precious Achiuwa had 15 points and 9 rebounds. The Mustangs, who trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half, finally overtook the Tigers with a 15-2 run, erasing a double-digit deficit for a 71-70 advantage. Memphis failed to score in the final 6 minutes. The Tigers were able to build the lead to 11 points on several occasions in the first half but could never really stretch it beyond the double-digit advantage. SMU was stymied by 32% shooting from the field and trailed 41-32 at halftime. Davis' 14 points in the first half kept SMU close. Achiuwa had 13 in the half to lead Memphis. (W, 58-53 vs Memphis on Feb. 25): DALLAS (AP) - Tyson Jolly had 13 points and 10 rebounds, leading SMU to a 58-53 win over Memphis. SMU jumped out to a 32-20 halftime lead. Memphis was 9-for-30 shooting in the first half, 1-for-10 from beyond the arc while turning the ball over 10 times. Ethan Chargois added 12 points off the bench for SMU (19-8, 9-6). Kendric Davis also scored 12 points and had 6 assists. Isiah Jasey had 3 blocks. Precious Achiuwa had 17 points and 7 rebounds for the Tigers (19-9, 8-7). Achiuwa was 6-7 shooting from the field and made 5-6 free throws. Lester Quinones added 16 points.

BALANCED SCORING: SMU nearly has five averaging double figures: Kendric Davis 19.3 (1st AAC), Feron Hunt (12.2, 14th AAC), Emmanuel Bandoumel 11.8 (16th), Ethan Chargois 10.1 (20th), Darius McNeill 8.6. SMU has had five finish in double figures seven times (1955-56, 1966-67, 1971-72, 1974-75, 1975-76, 2015-16, 2017-18).

RETURN TO SENDER: Yor Anei has 17 blocks in his 6 games at SMU. He is averaging 2.31 blocks for his career, which is 8th among active student-athletes. He has had multiple blocks in 40 of 70 career games (4 of 6 this season). His 5 blocks at Temple tied the SMU record for blocks in an AAC game (Ben Moore 5 vs Cincinnati 1-7-2016).


LOCKED IN: Feron Hunt has shot 55.4% for his career (6th at SMU). He is at 54.7% so far this season (4th AAC) after 55.4% as a freshman and 55.7% as a sophomore.

BUZZER-BEATING BANDOUMEL: Emmanuel Bandoumel hit a driving jumper with 0.2 on the clock for the 66-64 win at [-/rv] Dayton on Dec. 5. It was his second game winner. He hit a three with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 73-72 victory over [20/19] Houston on Feb. 15, 2020.

FIVE AND DIME: Kendric Davis is averaging 7.8 assists (1st AAC, 2nd NCAA). He has 5 or more assists in 29 of 36 games at SMU (8 of 10 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7/21 and has notched 13 assists twice (vs Houston Baptist 12/2/20 & vs Tulane on 2/1/20). He had 5 or more assists in 14 straight games (11/27/19 to 1/25/20). That was the longest streak with at least 5 assists since the SMU-record of 16 by Butch Moore from 3/14/85 to 1/8/86. PRESEASON ALL-AAC: Kendric Davis (first team) and Tyson Jolly (second team) were selected to preseason All-AAC teams. The Mustangs were picked to finish third in the conference race behind Houston and Memphis. Davis was an All-AAC Third-Team honoree last season after leading the league with 6.7 assists (10th NCAA) and a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (19th NCAA). He was second for SMU in scoring at 14.2 points (8th AAC) while also averaging 4.1 rebounds. He shot 44.9% overall (12th AAC) and 85.4% on free throws (2nd AAC). Jolly was also All-AAC Third-Team last season after leading SMU in scoring at 14.5 points (7th AAC). He was third for SMU at 6.2 rebounds (13th AAC) and second with 2.3 assists per game. He shot 38.2% from three (7th AAC) and 78.0% at the free-throw line (14th AAC). 

HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his fifth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 38th season as a collegiate coach, and his 16th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 255-172 (.597) [98-51 at SMU (.658), including 68-17 (.800) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game.
