SMU and Memphis meet for the second time in three days. Memphis won the first matchup, 76-72, at the FedExForum on Tuesday. SMU is 5-2 at Moody Coliseum this season.

In the first game of the week, both teams shot well with Memphis hitting 50.9% for the game and the Mustangs knocking down 48.3% from the field. SMU tied a season high with 11 threes made (25 attempts) while Memphis went 10-of-21 beyind the arc. Tyson Jolly led the Mustangs with 15 points in his second game back. Emmanuel Bandoumel had 13 ponts (3-5 3FG) and is 9 for his last 13 from three. Feron Hunt had 10 points and five rebounds. Kendric Davis had a game-high six assists with eight points.

SMU and Memphis meet for the second time in a three-day span. This is the sixth time SMU has played the same team in consecutive games since the 1952-53 season. The three most recent were the final regular season game and the first game of the conference tournament.

SCHEDULE CHANGES: The USF games at Tulsa on Wednesday, Feb. 3 and at SMU on Saturday, Feb. 6 have been postponed due to contact tracing quarantines following a USF suspension of activities. SMU will now play at Tulsa on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. CT on ESPNU. The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 13.

NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE: Kendric Davis was one of 35 players named to the 2020-21 Lute Olson Award Mid-Season Watch List that was announced on Jan. 25. The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player and the recipient of this year's award will be announced in April. Davis is the third Mustang to make the Lute Olson Award Watch List, joining Nic Moore (2014-15) and Shake Milton (2017-18).

AAC LEADERS: SMU leads the AAC in scoring (78.5), FG% (47.1), assists (16.8, 32nd NCAA) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3). The Mustangs are second in scoring margin (10.7), 3FGs (8.3), blocked shots (5.1, 19th NCAA) and FT% (74.1).

QUICK HITS:
• Kendric Davis was named the AAC Player of the Week and ESPN National POTW on Dec. 7. He was on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 30, Dec. 21, Jan. 4, Jan. 11 and Jan. 25. He was named to the weekly honor roll three times in 2019-20. Feron Hunt earned an AAC Weekly Honor Roll nod on Jan. 18. He was also a 3-time weekly honoree in 2019-20.

• Kendric Davis (2020-21 Preseason All-AAC First Team, Lute Olson National Player of the Year Mid-Season Watch List, ESPN Player of the Week [D7], AAC Player of the Week [D7], AAC Weekly Honor Roll [N30, D21, J4, J11, J18]) is averaging 18.3 points (1st AAC) and 7.6 assists (1st AAC, 3rd NCAA), 1.5 steals (4th AAC) with a 3.1 assist-to-turnover ratio (1st AAC, 23rd NCAA). He is also among the league leaders in FG% (50.0, 7th), 3FG% (35.9) and FT% (86.0, 3rd AAC). He has 5 or more assists in 30 of 37 games as a Mustang (9 of 11 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7. In 2019-20, he averaged 14.2 points (8th AAC) and an AAC-best 6.7 assists (10th NCAA) with 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals. He was 88-103 on FTs (85.4%, 2nd AAC). His assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.7 led the AAC and ranked 19th nationally.

• Ethan Chargois is averaging 9.9 points (25th AAC) and has been in double figures in 6 games. He is also averaging 5.8 rebounds (14th AAC), 1.1 steals and 3.3 assists (13th AAC) with a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio (8th AAC). He has 983 career points (SMU has 41 1000-point scorers).

• Feron Hunt (AAC Weekly Honor Roll J18) is averaging 12.0 points (15th AAC), 8.3 rebounds (2nd AAC) and 1.1 blocks (5th AAC) while shooting 53.6% from the field (6th AAC). He has nine career double-doubles (four this season) and has 7 or more rebounds in 42 career games (9 of 11 this season).

• Charles Smith IV is 2nd in the AAC in 3FG% (48.5%, 16-33) while averaging 5.7 points and 1.4 rebounds.

• Tyson Jolly (2020-21 Preseason All-AAC Second Team, 2019-20 All-AAC Third Team): Led team with 15 points at Memphis in his second game back. Made his season debut in the win at UCF. Missed the first 9 games this season (personal reasons). Last season, averaged 14.5 points (7th AAC) and 6.2 rebounds (13th AAC) while shooting 45.8% overall (11th AAC) and 38.2% from three (7th AAC). He had 15+ points in 18 of 30 games and 20+ on six occasions. He also hit 78.0% on FTs (14th AAC), including a 10-10 performance in the 73-72 OT win over [20-19] Houston on Feb. 15.

• SMU started 6-0 this season after starting 8-0 last season, reaching at least 6-0 in back-to-back seasons for the second time in program history. The other was 1984-85 (9-0) and 1985-86 (6-0).

• SMU is 98-52 under Tim Jankovich and 68-17 at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs are 5-2 at Moody this season and 20-4 in the past 24 games at Moody Coliseum (4-2 this season).

• SMU is 51-12 in regular-season non-conference games under Tim Jankovich. The Mustangs are 41-4 at Moody Coliseum in those games, 3-4 in neutral-site games and 7-4 in true road games. 


• SMU is 70-45 in AAC play since start of 2014-15. The Mustangs are 43-15 at Moody Coliseum.

• SMU received a vote in four straight AP Top 25 Polls beginning Dec. 7. The Mustangs also received votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll 5 straight weeks (Dec. 7 to Jan. 4). The Mustangs have been ranked or receiving votes in the AP Poll in seven of the past eight seasons (2013-14 to 2020-21).

•  SMU has won four total American Athletic Conference Championships, winning the regular season and tournament titles in 2015 and 2017.

•  SMU has had three players selected in the NBA Draft since 2017. Sterling Brown and Semi Ojeleye in 2017 and Shake Milton in 2018. Jahmal McMurray was selected in the 2019 NBA G-League Draft and is with the Texas Legends, the affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks. Ben Moore play for Indiana, San Antonio and in the G-League for Fort Wayne, the affiliate of the Indiana Pacers.

LAST GAME (L, 76-72 at Memphis on Jan. 26): MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Alex Lomax came off the bench to score 14 points and lead Memphis to a 76-72 win over SMU on Tuesday night. D.J. Jeffries had 12 points for Memphis (9-5, 5-2 American Athletic Conference). Landers Nolley II added 12 points. Moussa Cisse had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Tyson Jolly had 15 points for the Mustangs (8-3, 4-3). Emmanuel Bandoumel added 13 points. Feron Hunt had 10 points. Kendric Davis, whose 19 points per game heading into the matchup led the Mustangs, had eight points on 4-of-14 shooting.

THE SERIES VS MEMPHIS (12-15 on Court) (+11-15 Official): SMU lost the first matchup of the season after sweeping the meetings in 2019-20. Before that, Memphis had won the last two matchups afte the Mustangs had won six straight. The Mustangs swept Memphis en route to the 2016-17 AAC title, opening conference play with a 58- 54 win at Memphis before rounding off the regular season with a 103-62 rout to claim the outright conference title on Senior Day. The Mustangs have lost 3 of the 12 matchups against Memphis since both teams joined The American. (+11-15 overall, 8-4 in AAC; win in 2013-14 later vacated)

RETURN TO SENDER: Yor Anei has 20 blocks in his 7 games this season. He is averaging 2.32 blocks for his career, which is 9th among active student-athletes. He has had multiple blocks in 41 of 71 career games (5 of 7 this season). His 5 blocks at Temple tied the SMU record for blocks in an AAC game (Ben Moore 5 vs Cincinnati 1-7-2016).

HIGH-PERCENTAGE HUNT: Feron Hunt has shot 55.2% for his career (7th at SMU). He is at 53.6% so far this season (6th AAC) after 55.4% as a freshman and 55.7% as a sophomore.

BUZZER-BEATING BANDOUMEL: Emmanuel Bandoumel hit a driving jumper with 0.2 on the clock for the 66-64 win at [-/rv] Dayton on Dec. 5. It was his second game winner. He hit a three with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 73-72 victory over [20/19] Houston on Feb. 15, 2020.

FIVE AND DIME: Kendric Davis is averaging 7.6 assists (1st AAC, 3rd NCAA). He has 5 or more assists in 30 of 37 games at SMU (9 of 11 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7/21 and has notched 13 assists twice (vs Houston Baptist 12/2/20 & vs Tulane on 2/1/20). He had 5 or more assists in 14 straight games (11/27/19 to 1/25/20). That was the longest streak with at least 5 assists since the SMU-record of 16 by Butch Moore from 3/14/85 to 1/8/86. Davis' 6.7 assists led the AAC (10th NCAA) and had a league-best 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (19th NCAA).

That was the 19th time since 2010 a Division I player had at least 13 assists with no turnovers. MOODY MAGIC: The Mustangs are 20-4 in the past 24 games at Moody Coliseum after going 15-2 at home last season. That was the seventh time in program history that SMU has successfully defended home court at least 15 times. Five of those are in the past seven seasons. PRESEASON ALL-AAC: Kendric Davis (first team) and Tyson Jolly (second team) were selected to preseason All-AAC teams. The Mustangs were picked to finish third in the conference race behind Houston and Memphis. Davis was an All-AAC Third-Team honoree last season after leading the league with 6.7 assists (10th NCAA) and a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (19th NCAA). He was second for SMU in scoring at 14.2 points (8th AAC) while also averaging 4.1 rebounds. He shot 44.9% overall (12th AAC) and 85.4% on free throws (2nd AAC). Jolly was also All-AAC Third-Team last season after leading SMU in scoring at 14.5 points (7th AAC). He was third for SMU at 6.2 rebounds (13th AAC) and second with 2.3 assists per game. He shot 38.2% from three (7th AAC) and 78.0% at the free-throw line (14th AAC). 

HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his fifth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 38th season as a collegiate coach, and his 16th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 255-173 (.596) [98-52 at SMU (.653), including 68-17 (.800) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game.
