COLLEGE STATION, TX -- SMU's Cross Country team took sixth place in Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational out of a field of 33 teams, and each Mustang made improvements on their season.

"From the first runner to the tenth, every Mustang on the course marked improvements over the 6K," Coach A' Havahla Haynes said.

All but one runner from SMU posted a personal best. This was the last regular season meet leaving the team with high hopes for the upcoming championship season.

"To be hitting those check marks ending the regular season and heading into championship season is encouraging," Haynes said.

Kaitlyn Gearin continued a strong season with a personal best and was the first Mustang to cross the finish line at 20:58 for 15th place with 265 competitors on the course. She stayed steady for the entirety of the race staying between 12th and 15th throughout the course.

"Kaitlyn Gearin has been improving consistently and had a race to proud of," Haynes said.

The Mustangs entered the race ranked ninth in the South Central Region. SMU finished behind regional No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Abilene Christian and No. 7 Rice, but finished in front of No. 5 LSU.

Steffi Jones was the next Mustang to finish the race posting a time of 21:38 for a personal best and 46th place with Maddie Hulcy following just two seconds behind in 50th for another personal best. Lior Kremer was next for the Mustangs at 21:48, the fourth Mustang personal best. Five out of the next six Mustangs across the line also accomplished their best times for the season.

With nine personal bests and a top ten finish, the Mustangs have set themselves up well for the next meet, the American Athletic Conference Championship hosted by South Florida in Tampa. The championship will take place on October 29.

"The team has the capacity to fight for top spots in the AAC championship," Haynes said.
