No. 3 SMU Splits Season-Opening Meets On Saturday

– No. 3 SMU split decisions on Saturday as the team fell to No. 10 UT Martin by a final score of 9-6 before earning an 8-7 win over Delaware State.

The Mustangs (1-1, 1-1 ECAC) earned one Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honor against the Skyhawks (1-2, 1-1 ECAC) and two against the Hornets (0-4, 0-2 ECAC).

"We rode well all day overall as a team," head coach Carol Gwin said. "Some points didn't roll our way, but I am proud of how the team rose up and won the second meet."

In the first matchup of the season against UT Martin, SMU tied two events and dropped two. Senior Olivia Woodson earned the day's first point with a Fences score of 84. The second came from fellow senior Devin Seek, who recorded an 87.

The Mustangs also scored two in Horsemanship as sophomore Nya Kearns defeated her Hornet opponent with an MOP-winning 78 before senior Megan Waldron scored thanks to a 75.5.

Tied at four apiece at the halfway point, UT Martin won both of the final events. Sophomore Chalyce Head won the lone Mustang point in the event with a score of 72. Action against the Skyhawks wrapped up with Flat, where sophomore Taylor Madden posted an 88.5 for her first point of the season.

Freshman Elli Yeager made her collegiate debut against the Skyhawks as she scored an 86.5 in Flat competition, which was beat out by 2.5 points.

The day's second matchup saw the Mustangs earn an 8-7 win over the host team, Delaware State. SMU earned two event-wins and one tie after starting with a 3-1 loss in Reining. Junior Dani Latimer posted the only Mustang point of the event with a 71.5 to defeat her opponent.

Three riders won their Flat points over the Hornets as Woodson rode to an 86, junior Miranda Seade scored an 87 and Madden claimed her point with an 88. The event-win helped SMU enter the halfway point tied at 4-4.

Senior Mallory Vroegh earned the MOP nod after scoring a 78.5 in her Horsemanship performance. Waldron matched her teammates score with a 78.5 to even the event with Delaware State.

Heading into the day's final event tied at six, SMU junior Emma Jolly posted an 87 in Fences that earned her the MOP for the event. Seek won the Mustangs' second Fences point after topping her opponent with an 83 to secure the 8-7 victory.

No. 3 SMU is back in action next Friday, Oct. 8 as they travel across the metroplex to take on No. 6 TCU for the first of two matchups against the Horned Frogs this season. The meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m. CT. at Diamond Creek Ranch.
