SMU Beats Cincinnati 3-1 On Friday

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – SMU took down Cincinnati 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23) on Friday night. Jadyn Bauss secured her fifth double-double on the season with 12 kills and 10 digs. Kaylyn Winkler matched her career-high with three block solos, as the team picked up a season-best four on the evening. The Mustangs added 12 block assists and 56 kills to take down the Bearcats.

Maria Mallon led the Bearcats with six kills on 16 total attacks to begin the match as both teams traded points. Cincinnati used a 4-0 run to take a 9-4 advantage. SMU cut the lead down to two twice down the stretch, but the Bearcats hit .349 and gathered 19 kills to take the opening set.

The Mustangs tied the match up at one after limiting the Bearcats to a .051 hitting percentage and forcing 11 attack errors. Cincinnati led most of the set, but SMU scored five-straight points to regain the lead (15-14) at the media timeout. The Mustangs kept rolling as they took five of the next six points and eventually held on to take the set victory.

Both teams traded points all the way through the third set. The Bearcats held a 14-11 lead. SMU put together a 3-0 run to tie the set up. UC then scored three-straight times to force a timeout by SMU. The Mustangs secured five of the next six points capped off by an ace by Bauss. The set would later be tied at 20 and again at 21 until SMU finished the set taking the final four points.

SMU came out with the hot hand in the fourth set. The Mustangs rushed out to a 13-7 lead. The Bearcats slowly chipped away and used a 4-0 run to tie the match up at 20. Hannah Jacobs scorched two kills to put SMU back on top, which led to a Cincinnati timeout. UC was able to knot the set up once again at 23 until SMU found the last two points with a kill and a block assist to put the Bearcats away.

Jacobs and Woulfe both added 11 kills for SMU while Bria' Merchant led the Mustangs defensively with 11 digs. Lily Heim and Zairyn Hemsley shared the setter role finishing with 27 and 16 assists, respectively.  

Maria Mallon had a game-high 20 kills along with 10 digs, while Payton Frederick added 18 digs for Cincinnati.
