DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 12 Mustangs earned their third shutout win of the season in a 1-0 final against the Owls. Sunday night's victory at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium was SMU's second over Temple this season.
The Mustangs (6-1-2, 3-1-0 AAC) dominated the Owls (1-5-2, 0-4-0 AAC) during the first half of play with six shots, including four on goal, but weren't able to put the ball into the back of the net as the contest entered the break scoreless.
Midfielder
Gabriel Costa broke the tie in the 67th minute when he connected with a pass fromÂ
Skage Simonsen and beat out the Temple defenders to shoot the ball into the right side of the net.
"It was a good victory today," Costa said after the game. "I don't think we played well, but we kept putting pressure on them and outshot them by a lot, and at the end of the day, we found a goal so good win."
The goal was one of three SMU shots on frame during the second 45 minutes in which the team totaled nine total shots. Costa and Simonsen both tallied three shots while Kyran Pinho,
Bailey Sparks and
Mads Westergren each recorded two.Â
Cole Johnson earned his third clean sheet of the season with one save that kept Temple off the board.Â
Next up, SMU takes on Memphis on Saturday, Oct. 9. The contest is set to start at 7 p.m. at Memphis' Soccer and Track Complex and will be streamed on ESPN+.
