DALLAS (SMU) – No. 3 SMU dropped Saturday's contest at the Dallas Equestrian Center to No. 3 Georgia by a final score of 11-9 in their second straight top-three matchup as the Mustangs claimed both Western Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) titles.
The Bulldogs (2-2, 0-2 SEC) jumped out to an early lead with a 4-1 win over the Mustangs (2-3, 1-1 ECAC) in Flat. SMU senior
Madigan Eppink won the lone point for the home team as she topped her opponent 79-76 for her second win of the season.
SMU responded with an event-win in Horsemanship as they won three points to Georgia's two. After the Reigning National Champions took the first two points, the Mustangs won the next three as
Lily Anderson scored a 77.5 for her first point of the season before
Nya Kearns tallied a 78 and
Payton Neiberger rounded out the event with a season-high score of 76.5. Kearns tied her season high en route to earning the event's MOP honor.
Georgia held a 6-4 lead at the halfway point with Fences and Reining remaining.
Two Mustang riders won their matchups in Fences with junior
Alex Pielet defeating her Bulldog opponent thanks to a season-high score of 86 while sophomore
Taylor Madden won her matchup 73-50.
SMU worked to power back during Reining as they claimed the first three points of the event. Senior
Jill Pfisthner won the first point of the event 74.5-72.5 before
Taylor Zimmerman claimed her first MOP title of the season with a 74.5 as well.
Dani Latimer took the third straight point to tie the meet at 9-9 with a score of 73.5. Georgia went on to take the final two points for the afternoon's team win.
The Mustangs take the road next weekend as they travel to California to compete against UC Davis in Davis on Thursday, Nov. 4 before facing No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Fresno State in Fresno on Friday and Saturday.
