PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – SMU took down Temple in four sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-20) on the road to gain the American Athletic Conference victory.
Hannah Jacobs led the offensive attack for SMU (13-11, 9-5 AAC) with 18 kills on 32 attacks (.312 hitting pct.) while
Rachel Woulfe added 15 kills on 32 attacks (.406 hitting pct.). SMU hit a season-high 66 kills and 62 assists on the afternoon to go along with 18 block assists and 10 total blocks.
Jadyn Bauss completed another double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs.
Bria' Merchant once again led the back line with 16 digs.
Zairyn Hemsley notched another double-double from the setter position finishing with 23 assists and 10 digs.
Jamison Wheeler grabbed a career-best .375 hitting percentage accumulating four kills on eight attacks.
Both teams battled in the opening set. SMU took a 10-4 lead, but the Owls took back the momentum grabbing six of the next seven points (12-11) to climb back into the set. After a tie at 22-22 Gem Grimshaw gave Temple (5-19, 1-12 AAC)Â just its third lead of the set followed by a block assist by the Owls to go up 24-22. Woulfe got SMU back within a point, but a service error by the Mustangs gave Temple a 1-0 match lead.
SMU took the first six points of the second set. Â The Mustangs expanded this lead out to 11-4. Temple used a six-point scoring run to get back into the set (11-10). Jacobs and
Kaylyn Winkler then stepped up to grow the SMU lead to 15-11 with timely kills. A 4-0 run by Temple allowed the Owls to knot the set up at 15. The Mustangs forced a Temple timeout after a key kill by Bauss and a big block at the net by
Alex Glover and
Lily Heim. The Owls once again got within one point (20-19), but SMU rolled off five-straight points to take the second set.
SMU gained a 7-4 lead in the third set. The Mustangs kept the rally going and pushed their lead out to 12-5. The Mustangs never let Temple get back into this set as SMU took a 2-1 match advantage.
After following a 2-1 deficit, SMU notched six of the next nine points to go up 8-4 in the fourth set. Temple was able to get within two points (9-7), but SMU found points at the right time not allowing Temple to get any closer. The Owls cut the lead down the three a couple times down the stretch, but the Mustangs held on to take the AAC win.
Gem Grimshaw and Miray Bolukbasi both secured 16 kills on the day for Temple, as Falanika Danielson led the Owls with 17 digs.
