SMU women's tennis lost 6-1 to Oklahoma on Saturday from the Headington Family Tennis Center. The Mustangs captured a doubles point victory in the loss to the Sooners.
Facing a Sooner team receiving votes in the ITA top-25, the Mustangs started off the day with the lead thanks to doubles victories on lines one and two.
Playing together for the first time in dual match play,
Hadley Doyle and
Jackie Nylander took on the unbeaten Corley sisters on line one. The Sooner duo had a 6-0 record with two wins over ranked opponents this season. Doyle and Nylander won the match 6-4, giving the Mustangs an early doubles edge.
On court two,
Claudia Bartolome and
Chandler Carter teamed up to clinch the point with a 6-4 win of their own over Capurro/Romero.
Nicole Petchey and
Winslow Huth were leading 5-4 when the Mustangs took the lead.
The Sooners captured the momentum back, winning all six first sets in singles. They quickly moved within one point of a victory with wins on the top three lines over Nylander, Doyle and Carter. A win over Petchey on court five sealed the match and Huth's 6-2, 6-3 loss on court six gave the Sooners a 5-1 lead.
Claudia Bartolome fought through a lengthy first-set defeat that featured a tiebreaker lasting 22 points.. Bartolome responded with a second-set win, 6-3, but lost in the supertiebreaker, 10-7.
The Mustangs drop to 4-6 on the season while the Sooners improve to 5-2.
Next up, the Mustangs return to their home court for a four-game homestand beginning with Kansas State on the Wednesday (3/3).
