DALLAS (SMU) – No. 4 SMU defeated No. 9 Baylor, 12-8, and earned three Most Outstanding Player honors on Senior Day at the Dallas Equestrian Center on Saturday. The meet closes out the 2020-21 regular season, giving the Mustangs a 6-1 record heading into the conference championship.
"It's pretty amazing that during these crazy times, this group of student-athletes has persevered to pull out the best regular season record in program history," head coach
Carol Gwin said. "What a great way to honor our seniors – by capturing a top-10 win on senior day."
The Mustangs (6-1, 3-0 ECAC) started the day's action with a 4-1 win in Fences over the Bears (1-5, 1-3 BIG 12).
Emma Jolly won the first SMU point, scoring a 79 and defeating her opponent by one point.
Devin Seek and
Taylor Madden also earned points for the Mustangs with scores of 75 and 80, respectively.
Olivia Woodson had the highest score of the event with an 81 for her second MOP honor of the weekend.
Over in Horsemanship,
Nya Kearns led SMU to a 3-2 event win, scoring an event-high 77 and earning her fourth MOP of the season. Senior
Aubrey Alderman won her point with a 77.5 over her opponent's 71.5.
Megan Waldron scored the third Mustang point with a 76.
The Mustangs headed into the break with a 7-3 lead and didn't look back as they scored five more points to cruise to the win.
SMU won two points during Flat competition, with
Miranda Seade and
Taylor Madden both outscoring their Baylor opponents. Seade earned a 73 and Madden a 76 for the Mustangs.
The Reining team secured the overall win for SMU, starting with
Dani Latimer's score of 71.5, which won the first point of the event. Senior
Jill Pfisthner's 69.5 won her a fifth consecutive point for SMU. Alderman won her second point of the day with a 71.5 in Reining, which earned her the MOP award for the event.
After the meet's conclusion, the team honored its six seniors:
Aubrey Alderman,
Madi Johnson,
Jill Pfisthner,
Rylee Reiter,
Brecken Schaefer and
Elle Young. This year's 2021 senior class has helped lead SMU to three winning seasons, two conference championships and an NCEA runner-up event title.
