DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis topped Cincinnati, 6-1, on Thursday night to remain unbeaten against American Athletic Conference opponents this season.
The Mustangs got off to a strong start against the Bearcats with a win in doubles.
Jackie Nylander and
Hadley Doyle improved to 6-2 on the season with their 6-3 win on line one.
Claudia Bartolome and
Nicole Petchey closed out their win with a break on court two for a 7-5 victory. The freshman duo of
Avery Hilbig and
Winslow Huth were leading 6-5 when the point was clinched.
SMU continued strong in singles winning five of six courts. Bartolome breezed through her 6-1, 6-3 win on court four followed by Nylander winning 6-3, 6-1 on court 1.
Petchey clinched the Mustang victory on court five. After trailing 2-3 in the first set, Petchey won 10 of her next 11 games to complete her 6-3, 6-1 win. Doyle won her first set, 6-1, before heading to tiebreaker in set two. The sophomore won 7-2 in the breaker for her sixth-straight victory.
Huth forced a tiebreaker in set one and won, 7-4. Huth would take the second set and the match, 6-3. Hilbig also faced a tiebreaker in set one but lost, 7-3, to Alexia Coutino. Coutino won set six, 6-3, for the lone Bearcat point of the match.
The Mustangs move to 11-7 on the season and 4-0 in AAC play. They improve to 11-1 on their home court this season. The Bearcats fall to 2-6 for the 2021 season.
The Mustangs return to the SMU Tennis Complex on Saturday for a doubleheader. Matches are slated for 11 a.m. against UTSA and 2 p.m. against Northwestern State.
