DALLAS (SMU) – No. 8 SMU earned its second top-five win of the weekend with a 12-3 victory over No. 5 Fresno State at the Dallas Equestrian Center on Saturday.
The Mustangs (4-1, 2-0 ECAC) won all four Most Outstanding Player honors in the win against the Bulldogs (3-1, 1-0 BIG 12), marking the fourth time SMU has swept the awards during the 2020-21 season.
"Our talent showed today with the majority of our riders being mistake-free," head coach
Carol Gwin said. "We did a good job not beating ourselves with our own mistakes and riding well. We have great morale this year and the people on this team really want to be here and really want to compete at a national level. I'm excited about moving toward postseason!"
SMU started the day's action winning all four points in Horsemanship.
Nya Kearns led the scoring efforts with a 77.5 en route to being named the event's MOP, her third honor of the season.
Megan Waldron also scored a 77.5 for the second SMU point.
Mallory Vroegh and
Aubrey Alderman both scored a 76.5 to finish the event-sweep.
In Flat,
Miranda Seade and
Madigan Eppink earned points with scores of 81 and 88, respectively.
Taylor Madden scored a season-high 94 for a third Mustang point and a back-to-back MOP award. SMU held Fresno State to only one point for a 7-1 lead at the halfway mark.
Starting the second half, SMU went 3-1 in Fences.
Devin Seek won the first point for the Mustangs with an 83 over her opponent's 70.
Olivia Woodson earned a second point, tying the team's season-high score that she set against UT Martin with an 88. The event's MOP award went to
Alex Pielet, who scored a season-high 86.
SMU won, 2-1, in Reining after
Dani Latimer tied her opponent at 72.
Taylor Zimmerman followed with an MOP-winning ride that scored a 73, the highest SMU Reining score of the season.
Jill Pfisthner won the final point of the day with a 72 over her opponent's 65.
Ten riders went undefeated in their events over the weekend, including
Taylor Madden (Flat, 4-0),
Nya Kearns (Horsemanship, 5-0) and
Dani Latimer (Reining, 4-0-1), who remain undefeated on the season.
The Mustangs are back at the Dallas Equestrian Center for another doubleheader and the regular season finale on March 12 and 13. SMU takes on Lynchburg in a jumping seat-only meet on Friday and faces Baylor for Senior Day on Saturday. Both matchups start at 10 a.m. CT.
