Mar 9

Brecken Schaefer is our next athlete in the SMU Equestrian 2021 Senior Spotlight series. Brecken is originally from Fort Collins, Colorado and is a member of the Mustang's Reining team on the Western side. She was named to the NCEA and ECAC Honor Roll in the spring of 2020. During the 2019-20 season, she rode in multiple exhibition and demo rides, with her highest score being a 74 versus Auburn. Brecken scored a 68 in her exhibition ride this season against Fresno State.

Do you have any superstitions or pre-meet rituals?
I am not superstitious, but I am a little stitious about having an iced chai on meet morning.

Is there a nickname you have on the team?
My team nickname varies between Brecky and Becky.

What's your go-to pump up song?
"Stronger" by Kanye West has been my go-to pump up song since my time as an elementary school soccer champ. My dad would play "Stronger" in the car on the way to games.

Fun Fact
Ask Aubrey what she thinks of my driving. #JeepLife

How did you get into equestrian?
My Papa Mike is a reiner and shared his passion with me at a young age. I owe it all to him.

Which SMU horse is your favorite and why?
Tequila is my girl. For one, she is my care horse, but she really won me over with her outgoing, try hard personality. She will give you her all every day of the week and that is all you can ask for in an equine partner.

What's your favorite memory from SMU?
My favorite memories from SMU are the spontaneous ones: the late-night study breaks, the last-minute outings and the trail rides.

What are your plans after graduation?
I have accepted University of Colorado Boulder's MS in Finance program offer. I am excited to go home and continue my time as a student.

What's one thing you want to say to the SMU family?
Thank you. I am so grateful for the three years I spent here. Thank you to my teammates for the unforgettable memories. Thank you to the coaches for fostering a positive environment. Thank you to Cox Business School for providing an amazing education. I would not have wanted any other college experience.
