ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU) – SMU women's tennis fell to No. 46 Tulsa, 4-0, in the semifinal of the American Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at the USTA National Campus.
"Tough day today," said head coach
Jeff Nevolo. "Credit to Tulsa, they fought incredibly hard to get the win. We will regroup and get ready for NCAAs. We are right on the bubble but optimistic we will get a shot.
"This team has done an amazing job this season, Our last two months indicate where this program is headed and the bright future ahead. Incredibly proud of our group. Coach Brigit and I have absolutely loved coaching this team and hope we get another opportunity to be in a match with them in May."
In a rematch of a Mustang win earlier this season, Tulsa and SMU met with a spot in the AAC final on the line. The match began with Tulsa outlasting the Mustangs with a 2-1 win in doubles.
Chandler Carter and
Claudia Bartolome improved to 13-1 together with a 6-0 win on line two. The Golden Hurricane topped
Jackie Nylander and
Hadley Doyle on line one in a matchup of ranked pairings.
Nicole Petchey and
Winslow Huth dropped their match on court three to end doubles play.
In singles, the Mustangs won decisive first sets on lines one, two and six but lost on courts three and four. On court five, Bartolome forced a tiebreaker but Tulsa won the breaker to split first sets with SMU.
The Golden Hurricane extended their lead with a win over Carter on line four. They followed it up with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Huth on line three. The Mustangs trailed 0-3 at that point in the match, needing to remain perfect on the four remaining courts.
After winning first sets, Doyle and Petchey were each pushed to a final set by Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane capped their 4-0 win with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Bartolome on line five.
Tulsa moves on to face No. 8 UCF in the conference final at noon ET on Sunday.
The Mustangs have a 21-10 record heading into the NCAA selection period. The selection show is set for Monday, May 3 at 5:30 CT.
