SMU men's golf released its 2021-22 schedule Tuesday, a with nine regular-season tournaments highlighted by the Trinity Forest Invitational, October 4-6.
Â
The schedule has two regular-season tournaments already selected for television coverage on the Golf Channel, the season-opening Maridoe Intercollegiate (Sept. 13-15, Golf Channel) and the spring-opening Southwestern Invitational (Jan. 24-26, Golf Channel). The Mustangs won the Maridoe Intercollegiate, hosted by North Texas in Carrollton, the last time it was held in its traditional format (2019), with
Noah Goodwin taking home medalist honors. The Mustangs finished third at the 2021 Southwestern Invitational, beating hosts and eventual national champions Pepperdine by five strokes, with Goodwin finishing fourth.
Â
The Mustangs look to defend their event-record 27-stroke victory at the Trinity Forest Invitational October 4-6 at their home course. It was SMU's first team victory at its home event since it moved to the Coore & Crenshaw-designed track for the 2017-18 season event. Goodwin finished solo-2
nd in the event, with his teammates
Mac Meissner (now on the Forme Tour),
Ollie Osborne and
Nathan Petronzio all registering top-five finishes.
Â
SMU has two additional tournaments in the fall, heading to Winston-Salem, North Carolina before the Trinity Forest Invitational for the Old Town Club Invitational, hosted by Wake Forest, Sept. 27-28. The Mustangs conclude the fall season October 17-19 at the Isleworth Colleigate in Windermere, Florida at Isleworth Golf and Country Club.
Â
After the Southwestern Invitational, the Mustangs' spring takes on a familiar look, with return trips to The Prestige (Feb. 21-23), Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 27-Mar. 1) and The Goodwin (Mar. 24-26). The Mustangs enter The Prestige, hosted at PGA West's Norman Course in Palm Desert, California, for the third consecutive year after a fifth-place finish in 2021. SMU takes on the Southern Highlands Collegiate for the sixth time in seven tournaments, as there was not a tournament in 2020-21. The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford, has been on SMU's schedule each year since 2015. Goodwin came just three strokes away from winning his namesake event in 2021, ending up in a tie for fourth.
Â
The Mustangs conclude their regular season at Phoenix's Papago Golf Course, playing in Arizona State's Thunderbird Invitational (April 15-16). Papago gives the Mustangs a taste of desert golf, located less than 25 miles from the eventual NCAA Championship site in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Â
The AAC Championship, where the Mustangs finished second in 2021, is back at Southern Hills Golf Club, April 22-24. Six sites host NCAA Regionals May 16-18, with the top five teams and best individual not on an advancing team moving on to the NCAA Championships, May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course, May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
