OMAHA, Neb. - SMU finished the Bluejay Invitational with a five-set thrilling win over Omaha. SMU used 56 kills and a .298 hitting percentage to outlast the Mavericks.
Hannah Jacobs and
Rachel Woulfe both combined for 27 kills, while
Lily Heim gathered a career-high six aces in the first five-set match on the season for SMU.
(19) Creighton 3, SMU 0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-22)
SMU fell to No. 19 Creighton in straight sets to begin the Bluejay Invitational.
Jamison Wheeler led SMU with five kills, while
Hannah Jacobs added four.
Makayla Miller defensively paced SMU with 10 digs.
Lily Heim dished out 20 assists. Jaela Zimmerman and Norah Sis led the way for Creighton with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. The Bluejays hit .303, dug up 43 digs and gathered 22 block assists. Â
Illinois 3, SMU 0 (25-27, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17)
In the second match of the invitational, SMU dropped it first ever match against Illinois in three sets. The Illini took the first two sets by forcing 17 attack errors. But the Mustangs fought back in the third. After falling behind 19-8, SMU went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to four. The Illini held on in the end. Wheeler once again led SMU with nine attacks this time.
Bria' Merchant and Miller both gathered 10 digs each. The Illini hit .306 in the match as Raina Terry had a match-best 14 kills. Taylor Kuper notched 20 digs while Illinois dug up 49 digs on the day.
SMU 3, Omaha 2 (25-15, 15-25, 25-27, 22-25, 15-12)
SMU got back on track on Thursday. The Mustangs used a 6-0 run to end the first set. After falling behind 12-9 in the third set, SMU went on a 9-1 run. This dominant performance pushed SMU out a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs competed in the first fifth set this season and jumped out to a 7-2 lead. SMU held off the Mavericks late attack to grab the victory in Omaha.
Lily Heim was named to the All-Tournament team after compiling 86 assists, eight kills, and 16 digs along with her six aces.Â
