WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– SMU's men's golf team tied a school-record with a final-round 268, finishing the Old Town Collegiate Invitational in fifth place. The Mustangs'
Noah Goodwin, the reigning AAC Golfer of the Year, rallied down the stretch to tie for seventh.
The Mustangs moved four places up the leaderboard, shooting the tournament's best round of the day at -12, buoyed by par-or-better rounds by Goodwin (-5),
Nathan Petronzio (-4),
Ben Wong (-3) and
Holden Wisener (E). It matches the low gross total in program history, set twice previously at The Goodwin in 2015 and the 2019 Trinity Forest Invitational. SMU finished the event at -16, while host Wake Forest won at -35. A pair of Demon Deacons tied for medalist honors, with Alex Fitzpatrick and Michael Brennan tying at -12.
Goodwin has now turned in four straight scorecards of even par-or-better, including all three rounds at Old Town Club, but none have been as low as his final-round 65. Goodwin had an astounding eight birdies Tuesday, including five down the stretch, playing his final seven holes at -5. Finishing the event at -7, it was Goodwin's sixth top-10 finish of the calendar year.
Wong took 67 strokes to get around the par 70 / 6,966-yard track, and like Goodwin, did not turn in an over-par round in Winston-Salem. Wong tied for 14
th at -5, posting his best finish since October 2018. It was Wong's first tournament in the SMU lineup since the fall of 2019.
Petronzio bounced back from a tough opening day of the tournament and signed for a 66, matching his best round from his freshman season in the spring. Petronzio had just a single bogey on the day, matching Wong for the fewest dropped shots on the SMU team. Petronzio tied for 50
th at +3.
Wisener's even-par 70 was highlighted by an eagle at the 526-yard par-5 fourth, a hole the Mustangs played at an incredible -13 over three rounds. Wisener tied for 48
th at +2.
Ollie Osborne finished the tournament at even par, tying for 35
th. Osborne battled to a 2-over 72 in the final round of the tournament, and it marks the fifth time in 2021 that Osborne has finished at least 35
th in a tournament.
SMU returns to action October 4-6 for its home event, the Trinity Forest Invitational.
