DALLAS (SMU) – SMU suffered a setback against Houston in American Athletic Conference action at Moody Coliseum Friday.
In a matchup featuring teams with the top two records in league play, the Cougars cashed in several more opportunities than the home side.
Houston opened its largest cushion at 20-16 in the opening set and withstood a furious rally by the Mustangs in grabbing a 1-0 advantage with a 25-22 outcome.
The Mustangs overcame a five-point margin at 18-13, but once again they cut into the gap and closed within two at 21-19. The Cougars snagged a commanding advantage at 2-0 with a 25-21
Houston rode a 6-2 spurt in game three to cap off the sweep. Knotted at 7-all, the Cougars accrued 6 of 8 rallies, building a 13-9 edge.
TEAM RECORDS AND SERIES NOTES
- SMU fell to 12-7 overall, including 5-2 in The American, while the Cougars improved to 15-2, 6-0.
- The Mustangs lead the all-time series 25-19, including 16-7 in Dallas.

- Sophomore MB Kaitlyn Knobbe notched three blocks, two digs and two kills.
- She made her second career start.
- Knobbe equaled her season high with the three blocks, the third match in succession.
- Junior S Celia Cullen tallied 30 assists, nine digs, two kills and two blocks.
- Cullen accrued at least ten assists in 18 of 19 contests.
- Graduate transfer Tatum Ticknor finished with six digs and two assists.
- Sophomore OH Natalie Perdue accrued seven digs and two kills.
- Freshman S Casey Batenhorst chipped in with four digs.
- Freshman OH Jentry Lamirand recorded one dig.
The Mustangs close out the short two-match homestand, with the Pink Out Match in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, against Tulane at 1 p.m. Sunday.
