Â
With both sides playing their third match in six days, Memphis fed off the home crowd and grabbed a 10-8 advantage in game one. A powerful swing from the right arm of
Jamison Wheeler beat the Tigers' defense, sparking a 5-0 run. Following her successful attack, Wheeler followed with two of her career-high aces, pushing SMU in front. A 4-1 spurt by the home team, cut the cushion to 16-15, before the Mustangs rattled off five straight en route to a set victory.
Â
In game two, SMU overcame several deficits of at least four-points, grabbing a commanding 2-0 advantage at the intermission. Trailing 11-7
London Austin-Roark started a 6-2 spurt with a kill, with
Jadyn Bauss and
Alex Glover evening the game at 13-all with a tandem block. Courtesy a miscue by SMU, Memphis went up four at 20-16 but a another kill by Wheeler forced a timeout at 21-21. The Tigers moved to within three points of claiming set two with an ace. Wheeler evened the score on the next rally and after an attack error by the host, she smashed the decisive factor to the floor.
Â
Memphis built its largest cushion of the contest at six in the third frame at 13 but head coach
Sam Erger challenged the call. After a reversal in the original call, the deficit fell to 12-8. The Mustangs rattled off six of the next seven points, moving in front at 14-13. Each team traded the next eight side-out opportunities before Memphis pulled ahead with a 3-0 run at 20-18.
