Nathan Petronzio Wins Trinity Forest Invitational

DALLAS (SMU) -- Junior Nathan Petronzio captured the individual title at the Trinity Forest Invitational with a 13-under performance across the three days at Trinity Forest Golf Club. SMU men's golf placed second after carding a final round 14-under.
 
Petronzio came into the round tied for the lead at nine under and was able to separate himself with a four-under final day leading to his two-stroke victory. Petronzio (68-67-68=203, -13) shot in the 60s each of his three rounds at the Invitational. The title marked Petronzio's second career title after his first-place finish at the 2022 AAC Championship. The Bee Cave, Texas native has shot par or better in seven of nine rounds on the young season.
 
SMU, as a team, improved over each round of the tournament starting off with a six-under day, followed by an eight-under performance capped by Tuesday's 14-under showing. Little Rock ended the tournament with a 16-under performance to win the team crown by three. The 28-under par final total was third lowest by a squad in SMU history.
 
Freshman Zachary Kingsland (73-66-73=212, -4) finished in tie for 16th place. His tournament was highlighted by a six-under Monday score. Junior Dawson Ovard (69-74-70=213, -3) started his day with three straight birdies and finished the day with a two-under score, putting him in 19th place.
 
Will Sides (72-74-68=214, +2) saved his best for his final round with a four-under day. He ended his round with an eagle on 16 followed by a birdie on the final hole to finish in a share of 20th place. Graduate senior Justin Thompson (75-73-78=68, E) shot four-under during his final day to climb 20 spots on the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 32nd.  
 
The SMU "B" squad finished in fifth place among the 17-team field. Christian Clark (71-70-67=208, -8) led the "B" team with an eight-under score, including a five-under showing on the final day. The freshman finished in a tie for sixth place, the best showing of his young career.
 
Holden Wisener (68-74-72=214, -2) finished up his two-under performance, good for a tie of 20th place. Wisener capped the tournament with an even par day.
 
Junior Alex Valenzuela (76-71-68=215, +1) shot four-under on his final day to jump 20 spots on the leaderboard and finish in 27th place.
 
Freshman Trip Carter (73-72-72=217, +1) birdied three of the final five holes to cap off an even par day. Carter finished in a share of 39th place. Sophomore J. Holland Humphries (72-77-70=219, +3) finished the back nine four-below par including an eagle on 10 to finish in a tie for 50th.
 
SMU finished the tournament with seven eagles across the two teams.  The main squad was six-under par or better each round giving the team five rounds under par in nine attempts this season.
 
Next up, the Mustangs return to the course for their fourth tournament on the season October 31-November 1 at the Preserve Invitational from Preserve Golf Club in Carmel, Calif.
