Stambo’s NCAA Zone Score Leads Mustangs At SMU Classic

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's swimming and diving team wrapped up action at the two-day SMU Classic held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

The event welcomed top competition from around the country and featured eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. Each swimmer may compete in three events per day, and events were contested in two heats, with one swimmer from each school in each heat. Divers competed on 1 and 3 meter.

Nicole Stambo led the Mustangs, picking up her first NCAA Zone Qualifying Score of the season. The senior placed fourth on 1 meter with a six-round 265.85. This is the fourth career NCAA mark for Stambo on 1 meter.

A pair of career-best performances highlighted the 200-yard breaststroke for the Mustangs as Jenna Watson clocked in at 2:16.29 for fifth in the Championship Final, and Maxine Parkinson came in at 2:20.88 for sixth in the Consolation Final.

Watson (2:04.04) went on to finished sixth in the 200 IM, with teammate Jimena Leguizamon Leal (2:05.14) coming in fifth in the Consolation Final.

Leguizamon Leal was just off the NCAA B Cut in the 200-yard backstroke, turning in a fourth-place finish in Consols at 1:57.60. Kate Janzen swam for SMU in the Championship Final, finishing fifth at 2:00.97.

Indra Vandenbussche posted a career-best 4:56.25 to place sixth in the 500-yard freestyle A Final, while Annabelle Corcoran finished sixth in the B Final at 5:01.92.

SMU's swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle both picked up fifth-place finishes in their respective finals. Johanna Gudmundsdottir led the pair in the A Final at 50.24, while Vandenbussche was in the B Final finishing in a time of 50.80.

Parkinson's 2:00.98 in the 200-yard butterfly was good for fifth place in the Championship Final, and the 2:05.11 from Lucrezia Napoletano placed her fourth in the Consolation Final.

The event closed with a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay (1:32.15) from Napoletano, Gudmundsdottir, Vandenbussche and Parkinson.
