RESULTS

CARMEL, Calif. (SMU) – SMU men's golf finished in third place at the Cal Poly Invitational moving up three spots on the final day of competition.

SMU came into the final 18-hole day in sixth place and 20-shots back of first place. By the end of competition, the Mustangs jumped three spots and sat just four strokes back of the eventual champion, Ohio State. The Mustangs' eight under final day was the lowest on the course, with no other team in the 13-team field managing to shoot below par. The third-place finish gives the Mustangs back-to-back top-3 showings after a second place finish at the Trinity Forest Invitational.

Zachary Kingsland moved up 13 spots on the leaderboard in the final round with his two-under performance. The freshman finished alone in fifth place, the highest placement of his young career.

Nathan Petronzio continued his strong start to the 2022-23 season by finishing in a tie for ninth, his second straight top-10 finish. Petronzio shot a team best 68 in the opening round of the tournament.

Will Sides and Justin Thompson both finished tied for 13th at two under. Sides shot 69 on the final day to move up 26 spots on the leaderboard, the highest jump of anyone in the field. His 13th-place finish marked Sides' best outing in his freshman season. Thompson shot even par or better in all three rounds to highlight his tournament.  Freshman Christian Clark finished in a tie for 65th.

The Mustangs head into winter break before returning to the course at the Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 30-31.
