DALLAS, Texas (SMU) -- Heading into this year's South Central Regional meet at Texas A&M, the SMU Mustangs are currently ranked fifth. They have competed against several of the top five teams throughout the season, including third-ranked LSU who the Mustangs beat on this same course at the Arturo Barrios Invitational last month. SMU will look to claim one of those top spots this weekend for a chance at nationals.Â
"Regionals on Friday is all about the women keeping their momentum going," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "They have clear goals both individually and as a team. The past few races have proven they fight to achieve goals, and Friday is no different."Â
Two weeks ago, the Mustangs placed second at the 2022 AAC Cross Country Championships – their highest placement since 2017. They hope to keep this momentum going into tomorrow's race.Â
Maddie Hulcy finished sixth at the conference and will look to be a top contender along with Kaitlyn Gearin who placed 17th at last year's regionals meet earning All-Region honors. Also competing will be Jessie Crowley, Macey Hilton, Lior Kremer, Leoni Mierswa, and Alanis Robineau-Fauvey. Nikol Rafailaki will serve as the alternate for SMU.Â
"As a team, we are showing up prepared, improved and looking to be competitive against the top four to five teams," Haynes said.Â
The race will begin Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.Â
