DALLAS (SMU)- The No. 11 seeded SMU men's soccer team season came to an end on Sunday night in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament with a 3-2 loss to Vermont at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.Â
SMU (10-6-1) struck first in the fifth minute when the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player and Midfielder of the Year
Knut Ahlander fed the AAC Rookie of the Year
Alexander Petraeus, who drove the ball in on the left side of the goal to give SMU the early advantage. The goal marked Petraeus fourth score of the season, while Ahlander earned his third assist.
Petraeus earned his team-high 10
th assist in the 32
nd minute when he found
Bailey Sparks who made an impressive move past Vermont defenders and fired a shot past the Catamount keeper for SMU's second goal of the night.Â
Vermont scored all three of its goals in the second half. Max Murray scored his first goal in the 65
th minute and earned the equalizer in the 80
th minute.
Garett Lilly scored the game winning goal for the Catamounts in the 86
th minute.
SMU finishes its season with a 10-6-1 record. Six Mustangs were named to All-American Athletic Conference teams,Â
Knut Ahlander was named the Offensive Player and Midfielder of the Year andÂ
Alexander Petraeus was crowned Rookie of the Year. The Mustangs finished second place in the AAC regular season standings.
