SMU visits ECU on Saturday. The Mustangs are 17-5 overall and 8-2 in the AAC after an 85-83 win over No. 6/7 Houston at Moody Coliseum Wednesday. SMU is 14-2 in the last 16 games.

Against Houston, SMU rallied from 15 points down in the second half for the 85-83 win. The Mustangs hit 12-of-23 from 3-point range in the victory. Kendric Davis had 22 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Marcus Weathers also scored 20 points with seven rebounds. Michael Weathers added 17 points, going 2-for-2 on threes. The Mustangs had four score in double figures as Zach Nutall had 11 points on 3-of-4 from three. Stefan Todorovic hit both 3-point attempts to give SMU five players with multiple makes from long range. It was the eighth AP top-20 win under Tim Jankovich.
SMU is leading The American in 3-pointers made (8.9, 55th NCAA) and ranks second in the league for 3-point percentage (36.8%, 39th NCAA). Three Mustangs are averaging at least 1.7 threes per game with Kendric Davis making 2.4 (7th AAC), Emmanuel Bandoumel at 2.1 per outing (10th AAC) and Zach Nutall at 1.7. The Mustangs lead the AAC in defensive rebounds (28.2, 24th NCAA), rank third in scoring at 75.6 points, third in FG% (45.2%), fifth in FG% defense (40.3%) and second in FT% (74.8%). 

Kendric Davis is leading the AAC in scoring (19.6, 29th NCAA) and free-throw percentage (87.6%, 33rd NCAA). He is in the top five in the league in field-goal percentage (45.2%, 3rd AAC) and assists (4.8, 3rd AAC, 50th NCAA). Davis is also ranked in the league for assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8, 8th AAC), 3FGs made (2.4, 7th AAC) and steals (1.5, 11th AAC). Marcus Weathers leads SMU in rebounding (7.0, 2nd AAC) and double-doubles (4, T-1st AAC). Michael Weathers is ranked in the AAC in blocked shots (1.1, 7th AAC), steals (1.6, 9th AAC) and rebounds (5.3, 14th AAC).

Kendric Davis was selected to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team (1 of 30). He was also selected unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team, named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Wooden Award Preseason 50 Watch List, the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Watch List and the Lute Olson Player of the Year Award Watch List. This season, he has been national player of the week (Jan. 3) and earned a total of eight AAC Weekly Honors (3x Player of the Week, 5x Weekly Honor Roll). Last season, he was unanimous All-AAC First Team as well as USBWA All-District and NABC All-District. Davis led the AAC in scoring (19.0) and assists (7.6, 4th NCAA) last season, and was the only player to lead his league in both. 

SMU is 12-0 at home this season, and has won 14 straight at Moody Coliseum (T-9th NCAA active streaks). The Mustangs have wins in 33 of the last 37 games at Moody Coliseum. SMU is 5-3 on the road this season, going 5-2 in the last seven away from Moody Coliseum.

• Franklin Agunanne has played in 14 games this season, totaling 10 points and 19 rebounds. He had 4 points, 3 rebounds and an assist in 9 minutes in the win at Memphis.

• Emmanuel Bandoumel is averaging 10.2 points while hitting 36.2% on 3FGs (46-127) and making 2.1 threes per game (10th AAC). He has hit four threes five times this season (SMU is 4-1). Had a career-high 21 points in the win vs ULM on 11/28 and had his AAC-best 17 points in the win at Tulane 1/15. • Tyler Lundblade (2020-21 McDonald's All-American nominee) is redshirting this season. He was awarded a scholarship on Jan. 19 as Semi Ojeleye, 2017 AAC Player of the Year and current member of the Milwaukee Bucks, delivered a recorded message to the team after practice and announced the news. 

• Isiah Jasey started 15 of the first 16 games (missed game at Tulsa, and suffered a season-ending right Achilles injury vs USF 1/12). He averaged 1.1 blocked shots (8th AAC at the time of injury) and 2.9 rebounds. He had a career-high 4 blocked shots in the win versus Dayton 12/8. Last season, he started 15 of 17 games. He finished 6th in the AAC in blocked shots (1.0) while adding 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per contest.

• Darius McBride has made five appearances this season. 

• Zach Nutall (2020-21 Southland Conference Player of the Year at Sam Houston) is averaging 7.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists while hitting 35.2% on 3FG.

• Zhuric Phelps (2021-22 AAC Freshman of the Week [D13], 2020-21 Texas Mr. Basketball) is averaging 4.2 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.7 steals. He had 17 points in the win vs USF (1/12) and 13 points in the win vs Dayton (12/1). His 5 steals in the win vs ULM on Nov. 28 were the most by an SMU freshman since Feb. 19, 2011 (Jeremiah Samarrippas had 6 vs Tulsa).

• Jalen Smith has started 8 of 21 games played. He is averaging 2.3 points, 1.1 rebounds and he is 12-31 on 3FGs.

• Stefan Todorovic (Nike Hoop Summit, Serbian U19 Team) is averaging 3.1 points and hitting 42.4% from three in his freshman season (14-33).

• Marcus Weathers (AAC Player of the Week [J31], 2-time All-A-10 at Duquesne) has 4 doubles-doubles (1st AAC). He is averaging 12.2 points (15th AAC), 7.0 rebounds (2nd AAC) and 0.7 blocks while hitting 54.0% on FGs and 75.0% on FTs (12th AAC). He is also 15-37 on threes (40.5%). 

• Michael Weathers (2020-21 SWAC Newcomer of the Year at Texas Southern) is contributing 9.4 points, 5.3 rebounds (14th AAC), 1.6 steals (9th AAC) and 1.1 blocks (7th AAC) while hitting 76.1% on free throws (11th AAC).

• Jahmar Young Jr. is adding 2.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.7 blocks.

Ben Moore played for Indiana, San Antonio and in the G-League for Fort Wayne, the affiliate of the Indiana Pacers. Feron Hunt is with the Texas Legends, the G-League affiliate for the Mavericks. Hunt spent the 2021-22 preseason with the Dallas Mavericks and signed a 10-day contract with New Orleans (12/28).

LAST GAME (W, 85-83 vs [6/7] Houston on Feb. 9): DALLAS (AP) -- Kendric Davis scored 22 points and Marcus Weathers added 20 as SMU rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to stun No. 6 Houston 85-83 on Wednesday night. Davis sank two free throws with 40.6 seconds remaining to break an 81-all tie. Michael Weathers hit the second of two free throws with 24.1 seconds left for a three-point lead. Houston had a chance to tie in the closing seconds when Kyler Edwards heaved the ball toward the basket from near midcourt with two seconds left and was fouled by Emmanuel Bandoumel. Edwards hit the first free throw but missed the second. Edwards banged his third shot off the front rim and Houston was called for a lane violation. Michael Weathers added 17 points, including 14 in the second half, for the Mustangs (17-7, 8-2 American Athletic Conference), who moved within a game of first-place Houston (20-3, 9-1). SMU is 12-0 at home this season. Edwards, Taze Moore and Josh Carlton scored 17 points each for the Cougars, whose 12-game winning streak ended. Houston entered play leading NCAA Division I in field goal defense, yielding opponents only 36% per game, and was third in scoring defense at 56.6 points allowed per game. SMU passed that scoring total with 11 minutes to play and shot 46.4%. The Mustangs made 12 of 23 3-pointers for 52%.

SERIES VS ECU: SMU holds an 18-5 series lead over East Carolina. SMU has won 13 of the past 14 meetings. The past 14 meetings have been since the teams met in The American with two matchups in the AAC Tournament, in 2015 and 2017 when the Mustangs went on to win the championship. The foes were 4-4 while both were in Conference USA. The first meeting between the two teams was on Dec. 21, 1985 at the Kentucky Invitational (W, 71-62).

LAST SEASON VS ECU: (W, 71-56 on Feb. 8, 2021): GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Kendric Davis scored 25 points as SMU beat East Carolina 71-56. Tyson Jolly had 11 points and six rebounds for SMU (11-4, 7-4 American Athletic Conference). Feron Hunt added nine rebounds. Jayden Gardner had 23 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates (8-8, 2-8). J.J. Miles added 11 points and six rebounds. (W, 70-55 on Dec. 16, 2020): DALLAS (AP) - Feron Hunt recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds to lift SMU to a 70-55 win over East Carolina in a clash of unbeatens. It was the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Kendric Davis had 17 points and six assists for SMU (5-0, 1-0). Darius McNeill added 13 points. Ethan Chargois had nine rebounds.
Leading 30-28 at halftime, SMU opened the second half on a 17-6 run over nearly nine minutes to take control. Jayden Gardner had 13 points for the Pirates (5-1, 0-1). Bitumba Baruti added 11 points. 

UP NEXT: The Mustangs play a second straight game on the road, at Temple on Wednesday. The next home game is Feb. 20 vs Memphis followed by a home matchup with Tulsa on Feb. 23.

BIG-SHOT BANDOUMEL: Emmanuel Bandoumel is shooting a career-high 36.2% on threes. Has has made four in a game five times this season (SMU 4-1). He hit a driving jumper with 0.2 on the clock for the 66-64 win at [-/rv] Dayton on Dec. 5, 2020. It was his second game winner. He previously hit a three that beat the shot-clock buzzer with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 73-72 victory over [20/19] Houston on Feb. 15, 2020. He also hit a three to beat the halftime horn in the 80-75 overtime loss to Missouri. 

FIVE AND DIME: Kendric Davis is averaging 19.6 points (1st AAC, 29th NCAA) and 4.8 assists (3rd AAC, 50th NCAA) with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio (8th AAC). Last season, he averaged 7.6 assists (1st AAC, 4th NCAA). He has 5 or more assists in 47 of 65 games at SMU (13 of 22 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7/21 and has notched 13 assists twice (vs Houston Baptist 12/2/20 & vs Tulane on 2/1/20). He had 5 or more assists in 14 straight games (11/27/19 to 1/25/20). That was the longest streak with at least 5 assists since the SMU-record of 16 by Butch Moore from 3/14/85 to 1/8/86. HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his sixth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 39th season as a collegiate coach, and his 17th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 275-181 (.603) [118-60 at SMU (.663), including 81-17 (.827) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and nine NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game.
