Feb 22

Conference Release

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) -- Graduate senior Nicole Petchey gathered American Athletic Conference Player of the Week recognition for her critical role in the SMU women's tennis team's 4-3 win against Mississippi State on Saturday in Waco.

With the day's match tied at three points apiece, Petchey's singles outing against MSU's Alexandra Mikhailuk on line six was fated to decide the overall winner.

After falling 6-4 in set one, The Cape Town, South Africa native responded with a 6-2 win of her own to force a deciding set. At 2-1 in the third set with all eyes on court six, Petchey won four-straight games, clinching her third singles victory of the season and claiming the overall win for the Mustangs over Mississippi State.

Petchey, along with freshman partner Winslow Huth, claimed a 7-6 tiebreak victory over Mikhailuk/Alessia Tagliente, handing the Bulldogs their first doubles loss of the dual season. The tiebreak progressed to a 7-7 tally, before Petchey/Huth claimed the 8-7 and 9-7 wins, sealing the doubles point in favor of SMU and notching the pair's first win of the spring.

SMU returns to action on Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Wisconsin to open a three-match weekend at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
