HOUSTON (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team could not spoil Senior Day at Houston Saturday as the Cougars won 65-36 on their home floor. Savannah Wilkinson saw action for the first time in four games for SMU and finished with a team-high eight points and six rebounds in 21 minutes. It was the third straight road game for the Mustangs.
Houston (14-13, 7-8 American Athletic Conference) went on an 8-0 run late in the first quarter and finished with a 12-9 advantage at the first break. A 7-0 run to end the second quarter saw the Cougars end the first half with a 14-point lead, 30-16.
SMU (12-12, 6-6 The American) reached double figures for the first time in the third quarter, finishing the frame with 13. Houston added 15 in the quarter to extend its lead to 16 before outscoring SMU 20-7 in the final 10 minutes.
Danielle Sanderlin grabbed a team-best nine rebounds to go with five points. Jasmine Smith scored six points, and Keyanna Warthen and Reagan Bradley each added five points. The Mustangs were held to just 14-of-53 shooting (26.4 percent). Houston finished the game shooting 38.7 percent (24-for-62) and made six 3-pointers.
The Mustangs return home Monday for the first of two games against Temple in Moody Coliseum. Tip-off for both home contests is slated for 7 p.m.
