COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU) – Graduate senior
Claudia Bartolome handed Texas A&M's Jeanette Mireles her first loss of the 2022 spring season in a 6-4, 7-6 straight-set win, leading the way in a 6-1 loss for the SMU women's tennis team.
On court five, Bartolome and Mireles traded wins throughout the opening set of singles competition resulting in four lead changes on the way to a 4-4 tie for the set. The SMU graduate senior took control from there, winning the last two games and claiming a one-set lead.
The second set unfolded similarly for Bartolome, as she held an opportunity to clinch the match point with a 5-4 lead. This time Mireles answered, tying the affair then winning a second game to gain a 6-5 advantage. Bartolome responded in kind with a sweep of the following game, once again tying the second set and forcing a tiebreaker to decide.
Bartolome and Mireles traded wins throughout the tiebreaker set, but it was Bartolome who came out on top, claiming a 7-5 win and clinching the Mustangs' lone point of the day and elevating her spring record to 3-1.
Doubles competition proved a tight affair on courts two and three, as Mustang duos

Lana Mavor both ended close.
After falling behind 3-1 on the third doubles court, Petchey/Huth climbed back to trail 4-3. Petchey/Huth and their Aggie opposition exchanged wins in the following two games, setting up a critical 5-4 match point. Despite a competitive tradeoff, the SMU pair fell with a final 6-4 tally, clinching the doubles point for Texas A&M after the court-one pairing of Bartolome and
Jackie Nylander fell 6-3.

On line two, SMU's Keberle/Mavor held as high as a 4-2 lead, but were unable to maintain as their Aggie opposition took the proceeding three games to gain a 5-4 edge. Â Keberle/Mavor responded, tying the affair. At 30-all in favor of SMU in the 5-5 game, their match was called, as the Aggies clinched the opening stage and took a 1-0 lead on the day.
Bartolome's singles victory ultimately led the way for SMU in singles competition, as her other five Mustang competitors fell to their respective Texas A&M opponents.
After falling 6-1 in the opening set then trailing as far as 2-0 in the second, junior
Hadley Doyle took four consecutive game wins on the way to a 4-2 lead, looking to tie the match. Texas A&M's Mary Stoiana then claimed the next two games to tie the set at 4-4. Stoiana took the last two games, completing a straight-set win over Doyle and sealing a 6-1, 6-4 win.
Petchey led 30-love in the 5-4 game to tie her opening set on line six against Texas A&M's Ellie Pittman. Pittman responded with a win of her own, forcing a game point in which Petchey fell, resulting in a 6-4 set win for Pittman. Petchey eventually lost to Pittman 6-2 in their second set, completing a 6-4, 6-2 win for the Aggie.
