HENDERSON, Nev. – No. 16 SMU rowing tallied six top-three finishes across eight races on Lake Las Vegas this weekend, facing off against seven top-20 teams in four events.
 
SMU began day one of racing on Saturday with a victory in the second varsity four, besting (RV) Washington State by 1.51 seconds and No. 8 Washington by 4.44 seconds.
 
The Mustangs then took on No. 4 Stanford, No. 12 USC and No. 15 Penn in the varsity four, second varsity eight and first varsity eight events.
 
The first eight capped day one in third, 4.76 seconds ahead of the 12th-ranked Trojans. The four took another third-place finish, 6.26 seconds ahead of the No. 15 Quakers. The second varsity eight took fourth place behind Stanford, USC and Penn, with just three seconds covering second place USC, third place Penn and SMU.
 
On day two - after multiple delays due to high winds - a condensed racing schedule got underway with SMU facing off with No. 3 Cal, No. 15 Penn and No. 18 Oregon State in the first eight, second eight and four, fighting challenging and variable conditions across lanes throughout the day.
 
The Mustangs finished third in the second eight behind Penn and Cal, clocking in 10 seconds ahead of fourth-place Oregon State. SMU's varsity four took second, just 2.8 seconds behind Cal. The Beavers finished 3.28 seconds behind the Mustangs while the Quakers clocked in 14.98 seconds back.
 
The second varsity four ended the day with a second-place time of 7:58.86 behind Cal (7:51.89), and ahead of USC (8:00.43) and Washington State (8:00.91).
 
The Mustangs next head to Austin for the final regular race of the season, taking part in the Longhorn Invitational.
