SMU is in California this week competing at Azusa Pacific. The sprinters, jumpers, and distance athletes will all be united in competition again this weekend after competing separately in the last two meets. Only distance athletes competed in the last meet at San Francisco State, and Whitney Williams said she is excited to get back on the track again after two weekends off of competition.Â
"It's been a long two weeks," Williams said. "(This weekend), I want to be able to execute (my races) and hopefully set a new personal best."Â
Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes also echoed the goal of putting up new personal bests and season bests for all the athletes.Â
"All the events are set up to bring season bests and beyond," Haynes said. "The focus that has prevailed all season is to win ay section, flight, or heat that each woman is in. By doing so, marks that top the conference and qualify individuals to the NCAA Preliminary Round will happen."Â
After this weekend of competition, there is only one regular season meet that remains before AAC Championships and then the NCAA Preliminary Round. The Mustangs currently have 26 Top-20 marks in the conference. The goal this weekend will be to improve their times to move up in the current top rankings and add more Mustangs to that list. The strong field of athletes this weekend will put the Mustangs in the best position to do so.Â
"We are heading to California to take on the best competition in the NCAA," Haynes said. "We will see teams from the East Coast that we typically don't compete against."Â
