The Mustangs picked up 14 points in the final day of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship at Wichita State to bring them to eighth place as a team. Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes called the weekend a success. 

"This championship was a success on so many levels," Haynes said. "We had a school record, female freshman of the championship, and multiple all-conference performances! There was also the flip side of a championships – we faced some difficulties, but we still outscored our team projection and bettered our team performance from 2021." 

Steffi Jones got her medal today in the 800 with a third place finish and time of 2:10.46. In the 1500, Jones placed fifth with a time of 4:29.10 -- over four seconds faster than the preliminary round -- for four points added to the team score.  
"Though my 1500 didn't go as I had hoped, getting a medal in the 800 was the best pick me up ever," Jones said. "I'm so proud of my medal!" 

Kaitlyn Gearin picked up points once again in her second race of the meet – the 5k. Gearin came in sixth with a time of 17:07.89.  

"It was fun to race with so many of my teammates tonight," Gearin said. "I'm pretty happy with how I raced, even though I did not place as high as I would have liked to. It felt good to be able to score some more points for the team though!" 

Gearin's performances this weekend earned her AAC Freshman of the Year. 

"I am honored to have been named the freshman of the year," Gearin said. 

Freshman Maykayla Jackson made her conference debut this weekend and achieved a personal best in the triple jump -- placing 12th with a jump of 12.10 meters. 

"This group is young and tough and will bring the pressure in the coming year(s)," Haynes said. 

The Mustangs will be back in action at the University of Arkansas on May 25-28 for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with the hopes of punching their ticket to Oregon in June.
