LAS VEGAS (SMU) – SMU's
Danny Gray and
Grant Calcaterra were selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, joining 172 previous Mustangs selected in NFL Drafts. The pair match SMU's total from the 2021 draft, and are the most since the Mustangs had three in 2018. In total, SMU has had eight players selected since 2018.
Gray was selected in the third round as the 105th overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers. He is the fourth Mustang wide receiver to be selected in the Draft since 2018.
Gray led the Mustangs with 803 receiving yards and nine TDs off 49 receptions in only 10 games. His TD total tied for 10th at SMU and was 24th nationally after the regular season. After a pair of 100-yard games during the 2021 season, Gray finished his two-year career on the Hilltop with three total.
Gray was added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List on Oct. 27, and accepted invites to the NFL Combine and Reese's Senior Bowl at the conclusion of the season. He earned All-American Athletic Conference first-team honors and second-team honors from Pro Football Focus and Phil Steele.
Calcaterra was selected as the 198th overall pick in the sixth round by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Calcaterra started all 12 games and led Mustang tight ends with four TDs off 38 receptions and 465 yards in 2021. He was named second-team All-AAC and also accepted invites to the NFL Combine and Reese's Senior Bowl. Calcaterra started the year on Mackey Award, Reese's Senior Bowl and College Gridiron Showcase Watch Lists, and was mentioned on the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl Big Board.
Overall, Gray and Calcaterra make it six Mustang wide receivers/tight ends selected since 2018 (Kylen Granson, James Proche, Courtland Sutton, Trey Quinn).
Hayden Howerton and
Reggie Roberson, Jr., signed as undrafted free agents with the Tennessee Titans, while
Trevor Denbow signed with the Indianapolis Colts.
Tommy McIntyre has received mini-camp invites from both the New York Jets and New York Giants,
Beau Morris from the Indianapolis Colts and
Delano Robinson from the Arizona Cardinals.
