Four Mustangs are on their way to the NCAA West Preliminary in Fayetteville, Arkansas where they will contend for a ticket to 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This group is made up of Long Jumpers, Funminiyi Olajide and Raelyn Roberson, as well as Sprinter Whitney Williams and one distance athlete, Steffi Jones. They qualified by being in the top 48 athletes of their event in the Western Region.Â
"This is a talented group of individuals," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "They have room for growth, meaning they have the ability to qualify to the NCAA Finals."Â
Roberson said she is feeling good headed into this week's competition.Â
"Practices have been going well the past week," Roberson said. "I'm excited to go out there and give it my all."Â
Williams will compete in the 400 meters during Thursday's preliminary round. By advancing on Thursday, she will have a shot on Saturday to qualify for the NCAA Championships.Â
"I'm just trying to keep my spirits high and stay positive about this weekend," Williams said. "Practice has been good, and I just want to be able to execute my race."Â
Jones will be competing in the 1500 also on Thursday.Â
"This is the most competitive competition of the season," Haynes said. "They need to trust the processes that got them to this point and be present."
Olajide and Roberson will kick off the competition for the Mustangs at 6 p.m. on Thursday.Â
