SARASOTA, Fla. — SMU rowing completed day one of the 2022 NCAA Championships on Friday, advancing two crews to the A/B semifinals on Saturday.
 
With the top two finishers from each heat advancing directly to the A/B semis, the second varsity eight staged a strong sprint to walk through Michigan from third to second place in the final 500 meters, clipping the Wolverines by less than a second.
 
The first varsity eight took third in its heat behind Brown and Yale, with open water ahead of Virginia, Northeastern and Rhode Island. The varsity four collected another third place finish behind Washington and Ohio State, with another set of open water margins ahead of Duke, Gonzaga and Rhode Island.
 
The first eight and four moved on to the afternoon repêchages, vying for the same top two finishes to grab the remaining A/B semifinal spots.
 
The 1V8+ came out on top of a stroke for stroke fight with Rutgers to take second place and book a spot in the A/B semi, besting the Scarlet Knights by less than half a second.
 
The varsity four finished third in its rep behind Cal and Rutgers, advancing to the C/D semifinal.
 
Action resumes with semifinals on Saturday with the first varsity eight at 7:36 AM CT, the second eight at 8:36 AM CT and four at 9 AM CT.
