SARASOTA, Fla. — SMU rowing completed day two at the 2022 NCAA Championships on Saturday, advancing both the first and second varsity eights to the petite finals while the varsity four secured a spot in the C final.

The varsity four took a strong first-place finish in the C/D semifinal to advance to Sunday's third-level final, beating out Penn and Duke by two and seven seconds, respectively.

After an initial lightning delay pushed the start of racing back one hour, the first varsity eight finished sixth in a strong A/B semi field before another lightning delay pushed the remaining races further another hour. The second varsity eight finished fifth in the delayed semifinal, two seconds ahead of Michigan, to also advance to the petite final.

With six crews each in the grand, petite and C finals, the two eights will race for places 6-12 out of the 22 competing programs while the four will race for places 13-18.

The first-place finisher in the V4+ grand final will earn 22 points, with each placement after that receiving one fewer (21 for second, 20 for third, so on to one point for 22nd place). The 2V8+ winner gets 44 points, with each subsequent finisher earning two fewer (42 for second; 40 for third, etc.), and the varsity eight winner gets 66 points, with the second-place team getting 63, etc. Any ties in the point totals are broken by the two (or three) teams' finish in the first varsity eight.

In 2021, SMU finished 11th overall with 68 points, just one point off of 10th-placed Syracuse.

Sunday's finals get underway at 7:22 a.m. CT with the varsity four's C final, followed by petite finals for both the second varsity eight (8:46 a.m. CT) and first varsity eight (9:12 a.m. CT).

All races will stream live on ncaa.com with live results available on RegattaTiming and the NCAA Rowing Championships app.
