Mordecai Named To CFPA, Manning Award Watch Lists

DALLAS (SMU) – Tanner Mordecai was today named to both the CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy and Manning Award Watch Lists.

This is the second straight season Mordecai has been mentioned on both lists. It is the sixth consecutive season for the Mustangs on the Manning Award List dating back to 2017 (Shane Buechele 2019-20, Ben Hicks 2017-18), and third consecutive season on the CFPA list (Ulysses Bentley 2020-21, Shane Buechele 2020).

Mordecai threw for 3,628 yards (12th NCAA) and a school-record 39 touchdowns (5th NCAA) in 2021, while his 41 total TDs responsible for were also a program record. His 308 completions ranked second at SMU, while his 454 attempts were ninth. In all, he posted eight 300-yard games and five games with 4+ passing TDs and six with 4+ total TDs. He also ranked in the top 10 nationally and led the conference in points responsible for (248, 6th NCAA), points responsible for per game (20.7, 6th NCAA), completions per game (25.67, 8th NCAA), passing yards per game (302.3, 10th NCAA) and total offense (319.2, 10th NCAA).

Prior to the 2004 college football season, the Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only college football quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting; therefore, it is presented annually following the completion of the bowl season.

The CFPA National Performer of the Year will be announced Jan. 13.
