DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men's golf team unveiled its 2022-23 schedule on Tuesday, highlighted by its hosting of the sixth-annual Trinity Forest Invitational, set to begin on Oct. 2 in Dallas.
 
Fall competition for the Mustangs begins with a pair of first-time appearances - at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, hosted by Louisiana Tech at Squire Creek (Sept. 11-13) in Choudrant, La., and the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio (Sept. 26-27).
 
SMU hosts the Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club beginning on Oct. 2, seeking a third-consecutive tournament victory at its home event. In the Mustangs' fall 2021 showing at Trinity Forest, they tied the fourth lowest 54-hole tournament score at the event (826, 2019), giving SMU three of the top five team totals in tournament history.
 
The Mustangs close the fall stretch at Cal Poly's Preserve Invitational in Carmel, Calif., Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
 
SMU picks up its season in the new calendar year at the Arizona Intercollegiate which will begin on Monday, Jan. 30, at the Tucson Country Club. The Mustangs' first appearance at the event comes on just the second year the tournament is hosted at its current venue, as the Arizona men's golf program completes its transition to the Tucson Country Club as its newest permanent site.
 
On Feb. 26, Mustang golf makes its return to the prestigious Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas for their sixth appearance in eight years at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, hosted by UNLV.
 
SMU makes yet another first-time appearance on March 6 in the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2 – the host venue of the 2024 U.S. Open. The par 70, 7,125-yard course has served as the site of more single golf championships than any course in the country and hosted back-to-back U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open Championships for the first time in 2014.
 
SMU returns to Louisiana on March 13 for its first showing at the Louisiana Classics since 2012, at the Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette. The Mustangs claimed victory in five consecutive showings at the event from 2002-05, and finished second in their most recent appearance off top-20 performances from golf alums Sam Fidone and Max Buckley (2011-12).
 
The Mustangs close their spring slate with a pair of return visits to The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto March 30-Apr. 1, and the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago in Phoenix, hosted by national runner-up Arizona State Apr. 14-15. SMU closed The Goodwin the previous spring with a fourth-place finish behind a ten-under, fourth-place individual performance by senior Noah Goodwin, and a three-under showing by sophomore Nathan Petronzio.
 
The American Athletic Conference Tournament will be held at the Pelican Golf Course in Belleair, Fla. Apr. 21-23. The 2021-22 Mustangs closed the previous season by claiming their second AAC title and 10^th conference championship in program history, setting a 54-hole tournament scoring record of 835 (282-277-276, -29) at the Southern Hills Golf Club in Brookesville. Petronzio claimed the individual title – the first of his collegiate career – behind a 13-under, 203 performance which tied the fifth-lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history.
 
The 2023 NCAA regional sites are listed here, with dates to be determined, and the 2023 NCAA Men's Golf Championship will again be held at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 27-June 1.
