STILLWATER, Okla. -- SMU placed third this morning in the first meet of the 2022 season at Oklahoma State University with two athletes in the top ten finishers. Sophomore Kaitlyn Gearin said they did a good job as a team of running together and following their race plan.

Gearin and Maddie Hulcy finished just under 6.5 meters apart from one another with Hulcy in fifth and Gearin in sixth – running times of 10:45.59 and 10:45.97 in the 3k race.

"We were up against some strong teams today, so our main goal was to stay with them through the first mile," Hulcy said. "The pace was quick in the beginning, but I was really proud to stay in the front and then to hang on with that pack through the rest of the race with Kaitlyn."

Hulcy overtook 26 runners from the 1k point of the race to the finish line, while Gearin stayed consistent in her placing throughout the race moving up one spot at the finish line.

Leoni Mierswa was next across the line for the Mustangs running a time of 10:54.63 for 13th place. Jessie Crowley and Mia Olsen followed closely together in 22nd and 23rd. Lior Kremer placed 30th.

"I think we had a great performance as a team, and this meet sets us up well to compete for a conference championship in Tulsa," Hulcy said.

The team scored a total of 67 points for third out of the five teams present.

"I feel good about today's race," Gearin said. "I felt pretty good in the race and think it was a good starting point for the season. I'm excited for the next race and to see all that we accomplish this fall!"

SMU will compete next at the University of Texas at Arlington on September 10.
