DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU equestrian team opens the 2022-23 season against top-ranked Oklahoma State in the NCEA Meet of the Week Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
•    The Mustangs are coming off their fourth consecutive conference championship and second straight ECAC title in 2021-22, in a year that saw four NCEA All-America selections.
•    Dani Latimer received the Reining MOP at the 2021-22 NCEA Championships. Nine Mustangs claimed ECAC postseason honors, including two Rider of the Year honors, one Freshman Rider of the Year title, and six All-Conference selections. The Mustangs took down second-ranked Auburn in convincing fashion, 12-8, to advance to the NCEA semifinals for the second consecutive year.
•     The Mustangs return all but two starters from last season's semifinal team. SMU is competing as an Independent in 2022-23.

THE SERIES
•    SMU holds a 4-0 record against OSU at home and 5-11 record all-time. SMU enters Saturday's meet with back-to-back wins over OSU, including last season when the Mustangs took down the top-ranked Cowgirls, 10-5. The victory marked the first time in program history the Mustangs beat a No. 1 ranked overall team.

COACH GWIN'S CORNER
"This is our first big test of the season on Saturday," head coach Carol Gwin said. "We have a very seasoned team with excellent new talent as well, so I feel that we have a really good shot to try and get the upset win. The team has been practicing very well and we are prepared. Now we need to show up on Saturday and execute."

MUSTANGS LOOKING TO BUILD ON PAST SUCCESS
•    SMU capitalized off its momentum from the 2020-21 season last year, making it to the national semifinal meet for the second consecutive season. In 2020-21, the program saw many firsts and records broken on its run to the 2020-21 national championship meet. The Mustangs will look to build on their past success in 2022-23.

2021-22 NCEA HONORS
Nya Kearns (First-Team Horsemanship),
