SMU opens the season Sunday, as the Mustangs travel to Choudrant, Louisiana, for the three-day Jim Rivers Intercollegiate hosted by Louisiana Tech.
 
Event Info
The 7,105-yard, par-72 course at Squire Creek Country Club will play host to the Mustangs for a three-day, 54-hole tournament. Action begins at 7:30 a.m. CT Sunday as the Mustang tee off from hole No. 10 paired with host Louisiana Tech, LSU and Kennesaw State. Action resumes Monday at 7:30 a.m. and concludes Tuesday at 8 a.m.
 
The Field
SMU joins a 22-team field comprised of Louisiana Tech, LSU, UTSA, Houston, North Texas, Rice, Nicholls, Francis Marion, Southern Miss, Oral Roberts, South Alabama, ULM, UL-Lafayette, Abilene Christian, Troy, Middle Tennessee, Lamar, Kennesaw State, High Point, Central Arkansas and Missouri State.

Nathan Petronzio // The junior is coming off a championship campaign that saw him win the American Athletic Conference individual title. Petronzio was the third Mustang to win the AAC title, joining Bryson DeChambeau (2014) and Mac Meissner (2019).  The All-AAC selection went on to finish 39th at the NCAA Bryan Regional. In 33 rounds, Petronzio posted a scoring average of 72.27, eight rounds in the 60s and 14 at par or better. He is currently tied for fifth on the SMU career scoring average list at 72.75.
 
Justin Thompson // Back for a fifth season after taking advantage of the COVID year, Thompson registered a stroke average of 73.61 in 18 rounds for the Mustangs in 2021-22. His best finish was 22nd at the AAC Championships. Thompson is 10th on SMU's career scoring average list at 73.70.
 
Dawson Ovard // Ovard saw action in two tournaments for the Mustangs in 2021-22, claiming a 26th place finish at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
 
Trip Carter // Carter also saw action at the Trinity Forest Invitational, joining Ovard finishing 26th.
 
Two newcomers will compete for the Mustangs as Zachary Kingsland made the lineup for his first collegiate tournament and Christian Clark represents SMU as an individual.

SMU closed the 2021-22 season at No. 40 in the final Golfstat rankings and No. 37 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

Last Time Out
The Mustangs played to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Bryan Regional.

Noah Goodwin led the Mustangs finishing tied for fifth at three-under overall. Goodwin's one-under (3.97 avg.) on par fours was the third-best of the 75-player field. The senior's 38 pars were the second most of the field, with 39 being the high mark.

Nathan Petronzio hit par on 15 holes through the final round and finished the final day at three-over, with an overall score of six-over. Holden Wisener tied his tournament-low round, shooting a two-over 74 through the final round. The sophomore notched two birdies through the back nine to finish the day at one-over. Justin Thompson carded his lowest round of the tournament with a two-over 74. The senior ended the final round with a clean sheet through the back nine which included birdies on 11 and 18.
 
Mustangs In The Postseason
The 2021-22 season marked the Mustangs' 24th appearance in an NCAA regional, and third-consecutive. Prior to the 2022 event, the Mustangs finished in the top four in consecutive appearances, including tying for the win at the 2015 event in Noblesville, Indiana.
