DURHAM (SMU)- SMU dropped a 4-2 decision to Wisconsin in the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. SMU dropped the doubles point before Wisconsin picked up two of the first four completed singles matches.
Drew Morris and
Lana Mavor recorded the Mustangs points making them undefeated in singles play this season.
"Tough match today against a very strong Wisconsin team," said head coach
Jeff Nevolo. "Drew, Lana, and Jackie stood out in the singles today. They really committed and battled hard out there. We have a good opportunity to get better against defending A 10 Champions VCU."
The Mustangs will take on VCU in the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at 9 a.m.
Wisoncin took the doubles point after Ava Markham and Maria Sholokhova defeated
Taylor Johnson and
Jackie Nylander on Court 1.
Hadley Doyle and
Lana Mavor defeated Taylor Cataldi and Charmaine Seah on Court 3, 6-3, making the third match the deciding point. Court 3 bounced back and forth until Alina Mukortova and Xinyu Cai defeated Maka Makoric and
Drew Morris 7-5 giving the Badgers the point.
Lana Mavor gave the Mustangs their first point of the day as she stayed in the driver's seat in her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Charmaine Seah on Court 6.
Drew Morris brought in the second point with her straight set victory over Taylor Cataldi 6-4, 6-2 on Court 4.
Jackie Nylander was the only other Mustang to win a set. After being down 4-0 in the first, she came back to win in a tiebreaker 7-6 before the match went unfinished.
Wisconsin will go on to play No. 5 Duke in the championship match 12 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
