DALLAS (SMU) – SMU men's golf finished in third at the Stephens Cup with a match play victory over LSU on Wednesday.

The Mustangs faced off with LSU in the three seed vs. four seed matchup with the winner taking home third place honors. The match consisted of five individual matches with the winning team taking the majority of matches. The Mustangs took an early 3-2 lead with
J. Holland Humphries,
Zachary Kingsland and
Matthew Foster all leading their matches. LSU would rally to take a 3-2 lead of their own before the Mustangs came on strong in the final few holes clinching three matches and tying another.

Humphries got in an early hole before evening up the match in the early going. LSU took a 1-up lead with two to play. Humphries rallied to win the final two holes and give the Mustangs the first point of the day.

Kingsland dominated his match from the start, stretching his lead to 6-up thru eight holes. Kingsland maintained that pace and clinched his match four holes to play, 5&4.

Chaz Aurilia would fall in his match, 6&4 to move the overall match to 2-1 in favor of SMU.

Will Sides found himself in a 3-down hole five holes into his match. The sophomore won three straight holes on No. 13-15 to even the match. The pairing would halve the final four holes to split the match making the score 2-1-1 with SMU leading.
Foster, in the final grouping of the match, led by as many as four strokes during the front nine. LSU's Jay Mendell would narrow the match to a one hole lead with one to play. Foster was able to halve the hole to secure SMU the third point of the match.

The Mustangs return to the course on Sunday for the Fallen Oak Invitational from Biloxi, Mississippi.
