TULSA, Okla. (SMU) — No. 4 SMU defeated Tulsa, 2-0, at Hurricane Stadium on Saturday. Harvey Castro and Jose Ortiz provided the goals as the Mustangs recorded their seventh shutout of the season. The Mustangs are atop The American standings with a 5-0-1 league mark.
"Another shutout on the road shows the togetherness and fight of this team," head coach Kevin Hudson said. "All 11 contributed to a shutout and I'm proud of their continued work."
The Mustangs scored their first goal of the night in the 54th minute, with Castro spinning around a Tulsa defender en route to finding the back of the net.
"Harvey's goal was outstanding," Hudson said. "He's been combining well with Kyran down the left for the past several games. He showed great balance, skill and composure to take the first goal as well as he did."
The second goal of the night was also scored by another SMU senior, this time from Ortiz. He posted his 13th career goal at the 71st minute.
"It felt good," Ortiz said. "Coming up to Tulsa has always been hard for the past few years but today was huge for Cole and just for the team, getting a shout out and winning away."
Going into the matchup, SMU had three players earn American Athletic Conference honors. Freshman Niv Berkovitz received AAC Offensive Player of the Week, Cole Johnson notching his fourth Goalkeeper of the Week and Kyran Chambron Pinho being selected to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Johnson started and played the full time in goal for the Mustangs. He posted three saves against Tulsa (4-7-2, 2-4-0 AAC).
SMU (10-1-2, 5-0-1 AAC) has also earned shutouts against Central Arkansas, then-No. 25 Oral Roberts, Saint Louis, Yale, Charlotte and FAU.
Up next the Mustangs continue their road stretch, this time taking on UAB on Friday. SMU will return to Washburne Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 1 for Senior Night against Temple. Both games will be available on ESPN+.
