Mustangs Finish Their Season with a Sixth Place Finish at Regionals

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (SMU) -- SMU's Leoni Mierswa brought home All-Region honors at Friday's South Central Region Competition in Arkansas. The team finished sixth overall with 143 points. Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said the team had great momentum heading into the day.

"The women were executing the plan through 3k," Haynes said. "Unfortunately, a few missteps and adjustments had to be made. While we had the second best spread of the competition, second only to Texas A&M (who placed second), we lacked the top-20 spots needed to make a push for NCAAs."

Haynes said Mierswa had a stellar race, which earned her All-Region honors. Mierswa placed 12th overall with a time of 20:53.2. She said her teammates really pushed her forward to give all her energy and effort.

"I would not be here without my teammates," Mierswa said. "Our teammates who did not race this weekend drove all the way to Arkansas to surprise us, and this gave me all my energy. I tried to stay relaxed the whole race, tried not to press or stress, but to trust the process and myself."

Mierswa said they gave it their all. Kaitlyn Gearin ran a time of 21:23.4 for 28th, and Haynes said Kendall Saeger had the best race of her career with a time of 21:35.2 for 34th. Maddie Hulcy was just one place behind in 35th.

"Maddie Hulcy finished off an incredible cross country career at SMU," Haynes said.

Flora Tissier placed 46th shortly followed by Faustine Chaboche in 48th. Macey Hilton placed 91st.

"This group has momentum and drive on their side," Haynes said. "This team will have the day we hoped to have on Friday in the near future."
