No. 2 SMU Wraps Up Fall Slate With 11-9 Win At No. 9 UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. (SMU) – The second-ranked SMU equestrian team defeated ninth-ranked UC Davis 11-9 at the UC Davis Equestrian Center to wrap up its fall slate of competition.

Three Mustangs – Hannah Hoch, Taylor Madden (Flat) and Nya Kearns (Horsemanship) - earned Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) awards on Saturday. Hoch's MOP counted as her second of the weekend after earning an MOP in Fences at Fresno State on Friday.

The Mustangs have now earned at least three MOPs in four consecutive meets.

Saturday's meet began with Fences, with SMU winning the event 3-2. Taylor Madden scored an 84 to score SMU's first point of the day, defeating UC Davis's Jessie Rechs (75). Hoch earned her MOP with a Fences-high 88 to score a point versus Sierra Gundersen's 50. Augusta Iwasaki followed with a 79-70 victory over Carly Sweeney to secure the Mustangs' third and winning point of the event.

The meet then coincided with Horsemanship and on the Flat.

The Mustangs dominated on the Flat, taking four points. Iwasaki scored first for SMU in an 84-76 win over Marin Gilliland for her second point of the day. Madden also picked up an MOP and her second point for the Mustangs with an 85-73 victory over Sierra Gundersen. Emma Engel followed with an 83-74 win over Carly Sweeney, and Hensley Humphries scored a Flat-high 89 to defeat Lauren Kolbe (76).

Lily Anderson scored a Horsemanship-high 78, defeating UC Davis's Laura Holliday (76). Kearns earned her MOP ride and SMU's second Horsemanship point with a 77-75.5 victory over Jordan Schween.

Saturday's meet concluded with Reining with SMU up 9-6.

After three consecutive Aggie points, Taylor Zimmerman defeated Lauren Langbaum 70-65 to regain the lead for the Mustangs. Lily Anderson also scored for SMU, winning 69.5-67 against Amber Nusser to secure the SMU victory.

The Mustangs return to action for a back-to-back home stand against Delaware State and South Dakota State on Jan. 26-27.
