DALLAS (SMU) - Sophie Llewellyn has signed with SMU women's tennis for the 2024-25 season, Head Coach Jeff Nevolo announced on Wednesday.
Llewellyn, coming to the Hilltop as an incoming freshman, attended East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs, Fla. She hails to the Hilltop as a five-star recruit, ranked 37th nationally, 12th regionally and 7th in her home state of Florida.
"I got a great feeling when I stepped on the campus during my visit," LLewellyn said. "I loved how the team interacted with each other and I could really picture myself being one of them. The coaches were amazing and SMU felt like an environment I could see myself improving in."
She competed with the Celsius Tennis Academy — an elite competitive junior tennis academy — leading up to her signing with the Mustangs.
"We're so excited to have Sophie join us on the Hilltop," Nevolo said. "We watched her a lot over the summer and were impressed with her skill set and physicality. The more we spoke with her, it became clear she has high aspirations for her tennis and that's something we value as a program. We believe she can continue to improve and look forward to working with her next fall."
SMU won the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championship and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Entering the 2023-24 season, SMU is ranked fifth in the Texas Region by the ITA — along with Hadley Doyle and Taylor Johnson being ranked in the top 20 individually for the region.
