Napoletano, Mustangs Golden On Night Four Of AAC Championships

DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Lucrezia Napoletano won gold in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay took the top spot to lead the SMU Women's Swimming and Diving team on night four of the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The six-day event is being held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

Napoletano clocked a season-best, NCAA B cut 22.70 for the victory. The 2022 champion in the event, Johanna Gudmundsdottir posted a career-best 22.73 to earn runner-up honors. The championship is the fourth overall in The American for the Mustangs.

Luana Alonso also scored out of the Championship Final, finishing eighth in a career-best 23.12. Three swimmers scored out of the Consolation Final with, Tiffanie Ruan (23.26) touching second and finishing 10th overall in a career-best time. Valentina Becerra (23.44) was 13th overall and Indra Vandenbussche (23.50) 14th.

SMU became the back-to-back champions in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Napoletano, Alonso, Ruan and Gudmundsdottir combined for a season-best 1:30.84. The championship was SMU's fifth AAC title in the event, having won three straight from 2014-16.

Frederica Kizek opened the evening with a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle Championship Final. The senior clocked a season-best 4:50.06 to move up two spots from her No. 7 seed coming out of prelims.

The Mustangs were represented by four swimmers in the 200-yard individual medley. Jenna Watson and Maxine Parkinson finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Championship Final, with Watson finishing at 2:01.38 just off her career-best mark of 2:01.32. Parkinson finished in 2:01.97, but had a career-best performance of 2:01.46 in prelims.

Carlotta Scarpitti led SMU in the Consolation Final, finishing 12th overall in a season-best 2:02.57, while Jimena Leguizamon Leal finished 23rd out of the Bonus Final in 2:06.17.

The top-three finishes in each event will be awarded All-American Athletic Conference honors.
