DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman
Lucrezia Napoletano captured gold for the second night in a row to lead the Mustangs on night five of the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The six-day event is being held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
SMU sits third in the team standings with one day to go at 863 points. Houston leads the field at 972 and FIU is second at 957.
After winning the 50-yard freestyle on night four, Napoletano paced the field in the 200 distance with an NCAA B standard time of 1:46.19. The time also makes her the seventh fastest performer all-time in the event at SMU, and gives the Mustangs their first 200 free title in The American.
Indra Vandenbussche represented SMU in the B Final, finishing 10th overall at 1:49.52.
The Mustangs picked up big points in the 100-yard butterfly, with four swimmers scoring out of the Championship Final, led by
Luana Alonso with a runner-up finish. Alonso dropped her NCAA B cut time to 52.08 to move herself to fourth all-time on SMU's all-time top performer list. Also dropping her career time was
Valentina Becerra, who finished third in an NCAA B cut time of 52.80 to secure seventh all-time.
Maxine Parkinson was fifth in the final with a career-best 53.78 and
Johanna Gudmundsdottir was eighth at 54.58 after posting a personal best in prelims.
Kate Janzen (55.49, CB) picked up 22nd-place points for SMU.
Frederica Kizek posted a career-best 4:19.12 to win bronze in the 400-yard individual medley. The senior posted a career time in the prelims and dropped over a second in finals to secure a podium finish. It was her highest career finish in the event, having placed sixth as a freshman in 2020.
Jenna Watson (4:20.05) also scored out of the Championship Final earning fifth-place points, matching her best conference finish.
A pair of Mustangs competed in the Consolation Final, with
Carlotta Scarpitti (4:22.37) and
Ashley Lugbill (4:24.71) placing 14th and 15th overall, respectively. Scarpitti's finals time was a career best, while Lugbill saw a career mark in prelims. Rounding out the SMU swimmers in the 400 IM was
Hannah Lockyer, who won the event's Bonus Final in a career-best 4:24.42 to finish 17th overall.
In backstroke action,
Jimena Leguizamon Leal registered sixth-place points in the A Final, covering the 100 distance in 54.74. In her second performance of the day, Janzen finished 12th overall at 55.52.
A trio of swimmers earned points in the 100-yard breaststroke Consolation Final, led by heat winner
Julia Yakushi at 1:03.07.
Maddy Lewis finished just behind at 10th overall at 1:03.26, while Lugbill clocked a 1:03.52 for 14th.
The evening closed with a third-place finish for the 400-yard medley relay team of Leguizamon Leal, Parkinson, Alonso and Gudmundsdottir. The group combined for a season-best 3:38.82.
The top-three finishes in each event will be awarded All-American Athletic Conference honors.

Action concludes Saturday with the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
