ATHENS, Ga.—The top-ranked SMU equestrian team defeated No. 5 Georgia 10-9 Friday afternoon at the UGA Equestrian Complex. The win marked the Mustangs second victory over a top-six opponent in two days.
SMU (8-0) won three out of the four Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors.
Mallory Vroegh (Horsemanship),
Madigan Eppink (Flat) and
Taylor Zimmerman (Reining) were recognized for their rides. Vroegh's career-best score of 80 earned her the honor for the third time this season. Zimmerman collected her second MOP of the season and Eppink earned the accolade for the first time this year.
"Coach Kearns, and Coach Persons had this team ready to go today," head coach
Carol Gwin said. "We had great riding and showed a lot of heart to pull off a big road win against UGA."
The meet began with Fences and Horsemanship coinciding. SMU held a 6-4 advantage at the half.
After dropping the first ride, SMU's Horsemanship squad rattled off four consecutive points starting with
Lily Anderson's 74.5-71 victory. Facing a 78,
Mallory Vroegh stepped up scored an 80 to win her point.
Nya Kearns extended her win streak to seven with a 77-73 victory.
Alexa Black finished off the Bulldogs in Horsemanship with a 77-75 win.
Devin Seek put the Mustangs on the board first in Fences with a convincing 81-74 victory. Georgia picked up the next three points in the event.
Augusta Iwasaki countered the Bulldog run with an 83-81 win to move to a perfect 6-0 clip on the season.
SMU took the first two points of the Flat contest, starting with Eppink's dominant 89-82 victory. Next,
Hensley Humphries won her ride by an 83-79 mark.
After Georgia took the final three points on the Flat, the Mustangs headed to Reining with an 8-7 advantage. Zimmerman collected a 75-74 victory to extend the SMU lead and
Maria Richards delivered the meet-clinching point, with a 71.5-69 win.
Holding a 10-9 lead heading into the final ride,
Chalyce Head and UGA's Jax Bound tied at 71 apiece, earning no point and sealing the victory for SMU.
SMU is back in action Saturday, Feb. 25, against third-ranked Auburn at 11 a.m. CT.
