AUBURN, Ala. (SMU)—The top-ranked SMU equestrian team fell to No. 3 Auburn 15-5 Saturday afternoon at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.
The meet marked SMU's third competition in three days. The Mustangs took down No. 6 South Carolina 13-7 on Thursday and defeated fifth-ranked Georgia 10-9 on Friday. Saturday's loss snaps an eight-meet win streak for the Mustangs.
"I'm really happy to come out with two out of three wins against really strong SEC opponents," head coach
Carol Gwin said. "We have a four day turnaround to make sure we're ready to play Baylor."
For the second consecutive meet,
Mallory Vroegh (Horsemanship) was named the Most Outstanding Performer (MOP).Â
The competition began with Flat and Reining coinciding, with Auburn winning both events 4-1.
Emma Engel put SMU on the board first with a 74-71 win over Auburn's Sophee Steckback. The Tigers claimed the next four points on the Flat.
In Reining action,
Dani Latimer won her ride 68-66.5 to earn SMU's lone point in the event.
The second half of the meet saw Horsemanship and Fences occur simultaneously, with the Tigers taking four out of the five Fences points and SMU dropping Horsemanship 3-2.Â
Augusta Iwasaki remained perfect on the season, moving to 7-0 with an 81-80 victory.
Vroegh picked up her second consecutive victory, winning her point 76.5-73.5. In the final ride of the afternoon,
Lily Anderson took down Auburn's Caroline Fredenburg 73.5-72.5.
SMU is back in action on March 2 at Baylor at 1 p.m. CT.
